I have a dilemma. I have an 044 (10mm) builder with good bearings, case is decent, cylinder is good, tank is nice.

Its missing a piston, wrist pin bearing, clutch bearing, air filter, carb, and a few other minor details. Plastic is ugly on this saw.

I just today got an incomplete 046 parts saw that needs bearings, piston, spark plug thread repair on the cylinder, tank is ugly (MS460 tank). It has a carb.

It seems at first a no brainer to fix the 044, but I will have to use the clutch, starter assembly, coil and wiring, carb, muffler off the 046. That essentially makes the 046 not worth squat. I wanted to put a BB kit on the 044, but Im not replacing a good 10mm crank, so i would just order an OEM piston kit.

I have been wanting 2 saws I havent yet owned, one is an 038 Mag, the other is an 046/460. Thats why I was hoping to build the 046, but its rougher than I thought.

Have at it, tell me what you think.

I'd say if you've been wanting an 046 then build that one, and trade me the good handle off the 044 for my 440 handle :D

True, but Im trying to be practical. the 044 is in overall better shape...but the 046 plastic is better, but the 044 has a good tank...but the 046 ...:dizzy:

See what I mean, LOL!!!

put the the 044 tank on the 046.

i havent seen were they are actualy honestly proven difrent. some say the 046 tank is wider? you find out for us. are they both screw on caps or is the 46 the flippy cap.

many of the parts on the 044 will bolt on the 046. like the recoil, chain case cover clutch clutch bearing. you might even check part numbers and see if the 044 bearins are the same as the 46. might not be. but its worth checkn into.

i would big bore the 046 or get a oem used top end off ebay for 50-100 bucks

id build the 046

The 046 tank is wider. The 046 filter setup fits on an 044 but sticks out about 3/8" on the flywheel side.

hmmmm so youve dont it or seen it done

could you go with the 044 tank and filter cover on the 046

Gonna sell that 372 now? I got 038 mag parts too, including top ends. I'm just waiting for that right part saw to build my own.

Haha, we are two birds of a feather. Yeah, i might sell the 372. I also tried out an MS360 with an 036 tank I built today that is a strong running saw that I will be selling.

Ran 5 tanks of fuel through it out in the timber cuttin firewood (vacation day)

The 046 is much more rough than the 044.

Cool. Thanks guys. Im gonna build the 044 and then go after an 046/460. I already have a sweet 044 so it isnt a big deal.

Ha, isn't it fun building saws up and then trying to figure out which ones to keep? I just completed my own 372, runs very nice, still haven't cut with. Also just finished a nice 10mm 044. Finished my 7901 a month or so ago. Gonna be fun testing them all out. I already sold the 044, guy at work wants it bad.

Got a 12mm 440 I need to build next and 2 2065 J-reds that are getting 372 top ends. Have some 038 and 046 parts, just not enough to build a saw yet out of either one. This #### never ends.....and those are just my 70cc projects.:dizzy: Then there is the 025, 036, ms270, 246, 350 and an 066.
