On paper the Dolmar 7900 has the best power/weight ratio.
I do not know the torque, but when you compare 13.6 pounds dry to 6.3hp, there is almost no comparison.

Huskys 385xp is 6.3 hp, and advertises a weight of 15.4 pounds

The nearest saw in weight is the Husky 372xp, at 13.4 pounds, but only 5.4hp.

The Stihl 660 is in a class by itself, at 16.5 pounds, it is a full 7hp.

The Stihl 440 is 13.9 pounds (the new 441 is 14.6), but are also around 5.4hp.
Compared to the 372, the 441 is not really close imho.

The big problem with the equation, is that all of the weights change when you add gas and oil. I have compiled this list of stats from vendor websites, but I can tell you from first hand experience, the Dolmar, once equipped with a bar/chain and full tanks is a LOT heavier than smaller saws. It approaches the larger saws because of body size/tank volumes.

:dizzy:

Nevertheless, I think the 7900 is probably the saw to beat in the p/w challenge.

Stihl is all I have known. Only because that is what is serviced in these parts. I realize Husky, Dolmar and other great saws are out there, their just not out here.

Can't tell ya stats and number from my end, just in hand saw time. From the saws I have driven, for me the Stihl 460 so far is hands down the best pwr to weight. Just a little tip heavy with a 32 but I would rather have that than head heavey. More noticeable pwr than the 440 and just a pound more. The 660 is a weightier saw yet but will cut anything that you will need to cut these days, just seems like the pwr is not there for the weight like it is in the 460.

Now if'in you don't mind luggin around some weight the 084 is a cuttin beast, but you will pay for the pwr in the way of longer arms at the end of the day. Pwr to weight for me, the epitimy is the 084 I just would not carry one around all day, I guess I'm just not man enough. However should you come apon an old outlaw that is need'in to be delt with, you have an 084, tell your cuttin buddy to "stand back I gonna go ahead on'er" and that monster will be on the ground with not much sweat from your saw. I have used to the 088 and the 880 and neither seemed to have what the 084 has especially for the weight that you have to drag around when you are using the monsters.

Like I said no numbers and stats. Just my real time with the trigger and what my opinion is about what I have run and do run.

Bikesaw, not practical, not lite, but definately the best power to weight ratio by four times as much.

Your 460 with the dual port cover should be real close to a 7900. Maybe .5hp or ~1lb difference, not enough for me to justify a new $700 saw. Now if you "want" to try one, they do seem to run great.

Would a guy be further ahaed to just mod a 460? I was told a 460 modded could cut with a 660? any thughts to a 14# 660!! is it possable? Thanks

From what I've heard, a 460 with BB is damn near same displacement as a 660...

Numbers might be close, but the 7900 walks on the 460....hard. The 7900 out cuts the 385 in wood up to 28" or so. I used to have a 046, 460, and 385. I sold them all because the 7900 runs so much better.

the 7900 really is in a class all by itself. The power to weight is unreal.

cheers for that freakingstang,

so whats the hp/lb for the 7900 (or kw/kg)

i know the new 390xp wont match up but is better than the 385

from my catalouges.......

660 = 0.781kw/kg....... looking impressive :) dry weight 7.3kg

7900 = 0.728kw/kg...... very nice..... dry weight 6.18kg

460 = 0.678kw/kg dry weight 6.5kg

390xp = 0.676kw/kg...... :( come on husky just a little more... dry weight 7.1kg

372xp = 0.639kw/kg dry weight 6.1kg

575xp = 0.588kw/kg.... you fat peice of #### dry weight 6.8kg

357xp = 0.582kw/kg dry weight 5.5kg

old 346xp = 0.521kw/kg dry weight 4.8kg

and my husky 288's should be about 0.600kw/kg if i get them as good as new
(hoping for a little more..... ) dry weight 7.5 kg

and from tree slingers threads the 385 mods well, getting close to his modded 660.... but will the husky last cutting on the edge?????
i hope tree slinger runs both and gives that husky some hrs to see how it lasts....

anyone with the new 346xp and the 5100 stats
troll???

cheers serg
