I have a NT Grinder on the way and am half way into an old thread on the grinder. Have not figured out why I need shim and washer. Could someone help out a slow reader?

The washer & shim greatly increase the smoothness and remove some slop from the vise base portion of the grinder. It gives it much more precision in setting proper angles.
