I bought a NOS 031AV chain brake, effectively making it an 031AVQ, about a year ago. The brake takes quite a bit more force to actuate than modern saws like my 026.
With that in mind, I didn't think it would actually do anything if needed, but left it on anyway. Well......yesterday I got some major league kickback and the thing stopped the chain dead. Wow. I couldn't believe it happened. No damage, no injuries.....
