Just picked up one of these in mint condition with new 24 inch bar and chain. I bought it off Ebay, its not arrived yet but i am now thinking it has had a replacement main case put on it as the 039 should be fitted with screw in caps and the ms390 should have flippy caps. Or am i wrong.

You are right. Either the case or the handle assembly has been replaced. If the orange plastic has an 039 sticker, its off an 039. The plastic case shell is a 390 setup. I cant remember if the 039 had a decompression valve, but the 390 does.

Either way, if it runs good thats all that matters.

My 039 did not have a decomp.

I doubt that anyone at Va. Beach could give a definitive response, as it
was likely a case of using up old stock and switching in the new, common
with most companies, and the only ones that would even discuss it,
would be guys like us,,,,,,,,,

The 039 and earlier 390's did not have the compression release. There were even some 390's with the newest style rounded top covers that did not have the decomp.

As soon as you get the saw, pull the muffler and measure the bore. If it is not 49mm, you did not get what you paid for. There are lots of honest folks on Ebay. It is obvious that some parts-changing has occurred on this saw. Lets hope it didn't get a 45mm top end in the process. I started a thread on how to tell the cylinders apart from the markings on the side, but you'll have to pull the flywheel (easy) to check that out.

Well, that auction looks pretty squared away. I'd still check the bore size when you get it. THe 029/039 IPL DOES list the flippy cap tank for that saw, but I have never seen one that came that way. Maybe they started using the newer tanks before they went to the 390 designation in europe. In any case, that recoil housing is correct for an 039 with the recatangle "Stihl" logo. I bet it has the HD-21 intellicarb setup on it too, like the later 029 Super's. That saw looks very nice. I bet it is. You will want to do a muffler mod after you run it a bit to see what stock is like.

I am not a Stihl historian but Im purdy sure I remember the 0(x)(x) line of saws being discontinued long before the advent of flippy caps?? None the less you are correct in that Stihl has put out some saws for sale that never made the catalogs as for features, we own one. A 210C that was purchased new about 5(?) years ago that is an example of what you suggest. It has features of older and newer saws all combined in one.

She arrived yesterday. label on the brake handle says she is a year 2000 model. Ive sawn up a telegraph pole with her this morning and it absolutely flies. For what i paid for it and how well she performed i am very very HAPPY.

How does the utility company feel about sawing down said pole?

HAHA,

We bought loads of the old telegraph poles from the company that replaced them with fibre glass ones. We use them in 8 foot lengths for gate posts around the farm. They are perfect for us, they are 12 inch diameter and so is our auger that drills the holes, Not much back filling required.

Remember that IPLs are about replacement parts, not nesessarily the same parts that came on the saws when new. :)
