Stihl 064 AV from 1988 - cover washer help

Update - I will update with pictures later.

Site note question.

Ran the saw, it runs fine, without the cover washer - as expected.
I did however notice, that when hitting the chain brake, the chain can still be moved slightly/slowly when pressing the gas throttle, would that be a worn brake band?

Replacing that is not that pricy as far as i know.

Update on clutch/drum situation.

Fitting a cover washer behind the clutch, (I found an Original Stihl washer, which was same thinkness as the aftermarket, just made differently), it would fit without mounting the sprocket drum, see pictures.
I also changed to the lower dished washer with e-clip to mount it.

Would this indicate, that the problem lies with the old style drum?
The old drum being a little "thinker", I can't fit the washer+e clip with the drum mounted, as it goes just a tad over the needle bearing (see last picture).

Would buying a new drum solve this issue perhaps? as noted by @Dennisthemenace .

Thanks for all the help here!

Oh and pictures of the old and new AM clutch.

I see the difference with the "shoes" and "spider"

Other than that, they have the same size, thickness etc.
The drum sprocket measures around 35mm in thickness,

I would love to know if the newer style drum is slightly less "thick", does anyone have one they can check out? (see last picture)

What's wrong with the old clutch? If it's loose just replace the springs. Wear is indicated by oblong spring holes which I didn't really see in the back side of the spring holes. What does the front look like?
the old clutch, even with new springs, is loose and wobbly.

And I still can't fit a washer behind this old clutch, seeing as the dimensions are the same as the new aftermarket clutch.

Ill take the clutch apart if you can see the wear better from that. Will post pictures later tonite.

See the "wings" on the rear of the clutch shoe retainers? This was the original "anti-grenade" protection that was later upgraded to the backing washer. That clutch spider is too thick for a backing washer.

I see. Explains a lot.

I just dont understand why the new non oem wont take a washer. As it even comes with one. It must be the size/thickness of the drum then?

That clutch spider is stamped 1122 which is the correct series 064/066/MS660 for your saw. If the shoes have a series number on them check to make sure that they match your IPL.

The only thing that I can think of that would cause a "floppy" loose clutch is a shoe/carrier/retainer mismatch or weak/wrong springs. These clutches are pretty indestructible.

The original 064 clutch is slightly narrower at the thread boss (than 066/660)and no longer available. Note the different part numbers . If you use a 066/660 drum you will be ok. Otherwise delete the washer.
I know this because I put a new clutch (probably unnecessary but....) on my precious rebuilt 064 and had the same problem. Fortunately I had a 066 to pinch a drum from which solved the problem. I have seen another 064 without the washer because of this same problem.
Can you confirm that buying a new drum, should be slightly narrower to fit the cover washer along with the lower dished washer and e clip? If so ill purchase one just because I like things done right :reading:

Will take it apart and post some pictures. I think there is some wear into the shoes. But bought new springs first, only to figure out they didnt really solve anything. Odd I can't recall seeing this problem either on any other saw.

Pictures added.
And meanwhile I found the error - or what should be the error.
I had the wrong springs sent - the version for the "old" clutch is 5 links springs, and not 6 links.

I have however, still never seen a clutch be this floppy, the old springs aren't even that worn in the metal part.

Added picture from IPL.
In hindsight very annoying, they shipped me the wrong ones.
Could have probably saved the money from the non oem clutch.

I will however still like to get my hands on a different drum sprocket, to test if that fixes the cover washer issue.
Along with a new brake band, I think.
