The other day me and the guy I work for cutting wood with were talking about saws. He works for a different tree company than me and he is a high tensile crew boss and they use stihl 260 pros exclusively. He said they have been blowing up like mad and the quality of the piston and cylinders are way down. Some saws only last a week, granted these are getting used rough but they shouldnt be going that fast. Is stihl going to garbage, on a brighter side though he said that they just throw the saws out so I am gonna see if he can give them to me. If so it would sure be nice to have a stack of 260 parts saws.

My buddy that has a tree service runs the dog crap out of his and he uses
them for what they are not intended and gets about a year and a half.

I say horse manure, lasting a week, then the follow up question is what dealer you getting them at? Is Stihl taking care of the customer, fixing or replacing the saws? It's a proven reliable design, old and long in the tooth? I wouldn't believe unless I spoke to the dealer, maybe one saw and embellished to entertain. The topic would have shown up here long before now.

We don't sell many 260's but I talk to most of the dealers in the area regularly, I talk to my Territory manager every couple weeks, and we all swap info. back and forth. I'm sure if something like 5-10 of a particular model of saw started to blow up someone would have said something. And rarely if ever when saws blow up is it from defective cylinders, rings, pistons or machining. Saws seize because of lean running from air leaks or fuel, or dirt ingestion. I don't have as much experience as THall, or Spike but I have only seen 1 or 2 saw break rings. I'm calling horse manure on this one.
Nawwwww.....to be honest, it would make me sad to find out Stihl was making a habit out of putting out turd cylinders.
And you're right...without any credible evidence, this is just stirring the pot.
