so today I went back to the automotive paint supply and had them re-scan and remix the yellow 2-part urethane that came out too light. unfortunately, it's in the next town. the woman who was there today inferred that the boss's wife who did the scan last time was not to be trusted. sanded everything down with 320 and reshot 2 coats with the new mix. looked much better but tomorrow when I take them down will be the test. the NOS base and brake handle look like Caterpillar yellow. another sauna in my little plastic tent.

very pleased with the paint this morning. the color is perfect. the finish is actually too good to look anything like OEM. not tooting my horn, just that, at least on this saw and on the NOS parts Mark sent me the paint is smooth and shiny in some areas with orange peel in other areas, thin in some spots and can actually see primer thru the paint in places. this is to be expected in the production of a tool, but I didn't replicate that. I just shot on the paint. it's very glossy. I need to take it out in the woods after assembly and beat hell out of it to make it look right. in this pic, the brake handle and the base to the left of it are NOS parts with original paint.

one thing I noticed when I got this saw is that the textured paint they used on the air filter cover caused the decal to come loose from air pockets. so, I painted the area that would be under the new decal with smooth gloss black, then masked that off after it cured and did the rest in the textured black. hopefully this helps the new repro decal stay down flat and tight.
