I'm totally into the right to bear arms, but if you get stopped by the law and have a concealed handgun on your person without a ppermit they can get you with a felony. I have a ccw and while deer hunting with a muzzle loader forgot to take the primer out when heading to my hunting g spot a 1/2 mile fROM my house and the game warden stopped me and almost gave me a felony for that. I got off the felony, but ended up getting a misdemeanor improper handling charge. I don't know what this country is coming to.

And we let those who live off our tax dollars both define and enforce those laws. And now we have a problem. Our fault for 100 years of trusting those who would rule....now what.

And how did we go from Stihl 290's to poly ticks??

I've owned an 029 since the mid 90's and I love that saw. I still have it and still cut with it, and I've NEVER touched the engine yet. It has been used for countless hours during it's lifetime and still starts right up. It's just now getting to the point that the cylinder is getting scored and it's losing compression. This, almost 20 years later. I can't speak for the MS290 having never had one, but my 029 is my go to saw when I have a job to do. Say what you will, this saw can hold it's own, and if it's too heavy, you're too old.

Just adding my thoughts. Can't see why the 029/290 is getting a bad name. I know a handful of friends with 029/290s that love them and they serve us well. We can't all afford 440s or 660s, nor do we all need them. For the $400 price tag, for a saw that has lasted me almost 20 years now with no major issues, I can't say this is a bad saw at all.

"but my 029 is my go to saw when I have a job to do."

Just for giggles, I built a 029 with a 390 top end and a 20" narrow kerf bar. I never thought that beat up old POS would become my go-to saw.

The best reason to not buy a new ms290? Probably because for the same money you can buy a used 026, 034 super, 036, or used 346xp. If the planets are in alignment, and you've worn your lucky socks, you can even score a nice 044 magnum, or 372xp.

Amazingly while the 290 won't cut in the same league, it will hold its value just as well.

Hmm, heaps of those 029/290s are just waiting to be rebuilt with a 390 top end. Then ditch the heavy bar -

Hey, Is this still a saw forum? :sucks:

If you read the whole thread you will see it goes back and forth between saw and gun discussion. :chainsaw: No smiley holding a gun yet though. :D

BIG REASON I've never gotten a carry permit is because I would be admitting that I need one or special permission when the second amendment clearly states that my (God given) rights to own and bear (carry) arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!
Interesting.

Conceal......... No

I think the "rancher" type saws are great saws . Im not a Stihl guy........rather a Husky guy . I have a Husky 350 on my shelf . Bought it new 15 years ago . Used the piss out of it . Used it for making ATV trails on my parents back 40 . Used it to clear where my house will go someday...and cleared where my pond is now . I also even had a not-so-lucrative job cutting the tree tops loggers left behind in the woods . Still runs and has 150 PSI compression ! It was my only saw up until about 4 or 5 years ago...when I realized I could have more :) Then I kinda retired the 350 alil , got a 450...and was impressed with it . I could have honestly kept the 450 and used it for all my cutting for the next 20 years in all seriousness . And thats 10 to 15 cords a year..plus clearing at my property . But I like the hobby...I like saws...I like the people who are into saws....and thats my only excuse for having more saws than I "need" :)

Not everyone needs a Cadillac to cross the finish line. Some are quite content crossing the finish line in a Ford Escort
Cadillac over a Ford escort? You've been looking at the wrong ford escorts :D

This what I believe the OP was getting at. For the $440 it cost for a new 291 you could get a very nice pro saw used. Heck, for about $60 more, you can get a 066/660 here in the trading post (yes, currently) Or an 036, 034 Super, 262, Etc. All very nice saws, with much more power.

I owned a 455 Rancher. I liked it (not gonna lie) but I never owned a bigger Pro saw. My next saw was a 036 Pro. I sold every homeowner saw I had.

The 290/291-455/460/455 AT are a decent saw. But for that money? You could do better (used). Many places out there with trusted sellers of good used saws. Like here.......

AkDoug, Crikey you're right, I just checked Bailey's and there is a limited selection regarding Universal Bars in narrow kerf - http://www.baileysonline.com/Chains...25-Pitch-78-Drive-Links---Universal-Mount.axd

I had a Husky 20" narrow kerf bar (allegedly the most rigid and longest wearing of the NK bars) in my shed with three chains, so I just modded everything so it would go on the 029. Works like a charm, my mate's stock 372 is close to it and I haven't finished modding the saw (I'll race him when I'm finished and bury him) - not bad for a $50 crap saw from the bin in the back of the shop. With a 13 LB powerhead and a lightweight bar it is cutting well above it's weight.

You guys should be putting the word to the Stihl dealers. It could be a great seller to bring people into the shop. Of course, maybe they might be worried about selling a bar and chain that makes their bigger saws superfluous - that could hurt the bigger dollar sales.

There has to be a NK bar somewhere that would go on an 029/290 with less work than the Husky bar...
