I searched the forum for an answer to my question - couldn't find it - so please forgive me if this is redundant. I have the chance to get my hands on some free maple tops and was wondering how this wood "stacked up" for fireplace usage. I know there's an obvious sap issue. My only real background is with oak firewood. Thanks for the help.

Maple isn't oak for sure, probably 10-15% less heat output per cord, but it is every bit as good as cherry or ash. It also seasons faster than oak. Never heard of "sap" being an issue in properly seasoned firewood. I guess you could say "water" is an issue with oak firewood.

Most important, free is free. Would you turn down a free Ford just because it isn't a GMC? ;)
