Walnut??

Red elm. burn some in a fire, if it smells like cow poop it is definite.

Yeah if it splits hard and stinks, it may well be Elm.

Maybe still walnut? I just got fooled by a long-term standing dead this fall. When up I thought it was ash. Initially, when down, it was red almost like red oak, and definitely lighter on the ends than any walnut I have done in the past. When split and sitting a while it darkened up considerably - Walnut and beautiful grain to boot. You know...the "very valuable" kind!!

It's "ok" in the stove, but not as much heat and too much ash production. I normally don't bother with it.
BTW - you all have made me a wood snob over this last 10Y!
