In the past 2 years there has been a string of houses that all of the Red Pines are dying. Most of which I have since cut down. What would cause this. There are other Pines that are healthy.

I not exactly a stand of trees there are scattered amongst about 10 acres. There are other trees mainly White Pine and Cedars between the Red Pine. They die fast. Needles turn brown but don't drop. The jackets (outermost 1-2 inches) of the logs is a grayish color. Bark does have a lot of small holes (<1/4") in it.

Pine nematode?

We've been having stressed pine trees die on the west side of the Detroit suburbs due to the introduction of pine nematodes from pine sawyer beetles. So far, they seem to be affecting only stressed trees. Most of these are non-native (Austrian, etc.). One of the symptoms is holes "about the size of a BB." There may be more info on the Michigan State Extension site.
