the bark looks very much like ash the wood grain is tight and resembles elm though but elm has shaggy jagged bark ,i would vote its likely ash
 
Elm

The difference between trying to split Ash and Elm ( by hand ) is like day and night. Ash will pop apart, Elm ... doesn't. It more gets ripped apart, even in a hydraulic splitter it dont come out pretty.

Ash.

Sadly, elms that big around here don't have any bark (disease). Also the grain will twist as it goes the length of the trunk/branch in an elm--should be easy to see under the bark.

Aside from the word Elm, I agree completely! But it's ash :)
