Take a look at this osage orange. You can get an idea of its size by comparing it to the benches around it. It's in Fort Harrod State Park in Ky.

Wow! That's a big osage orange tree. Our's usually fall apart like the one in the photo before they get that big so I had no idea. Plus they usually grow in fence rows around here which get cleared every so often.
 
There are also some Osage Orange trees at the Oatlands plantation about 10 miles from my house that are the same size as the one in your pic. Massive trees for sure.

I'm about 2 minutes from Oatlands. I'll try to get out there maybe one day and take the camera...can update this thread with pics.
 
I may be going out on a limb here but i am going to guess bitternut hickory. The end grain ,bark,and splitting remind me of bitternut hickory.
