Thanks guys. I took down another maple for my neighbors and it has darker bark and is very heavy even after drying for 3 years. What kind of maple would that be?

Maple from another universe?

All the maple I have seen is VERY light after a year of seasoning. By the time it's cut, 90% of the Maple I see is spalded from the upper trunk up, and full of carpenter ants. I split some yesterday that had a 1/2" hole bored in the middle and after I split it hundreds of carpenter ants spilled out. I am hesitant to take Maple for that reason.
