Well i will agree that a smaller saw is easier to manuever and handle. I'm just a firewooder and very few oaks i cut are 12 inch. Most 24 to 30ish accross. And some bigger. I also can prove that with a few threads i have started here before. So a bigger saw is what i need, not a homeowner stihl. Untill you know what kind and size of trees a homeowner cuts, you can't say they don't need a pro saw. and whats up with being a member since 2006 and only having 34 post?

His very first post was Jan 26, 2013.

People get killed by chainsaws every day, nothing quite like speeding up the process by handing a complete novice a fire breathing pro falling chainsaw

Watch and learn...

If being responsible is hostile, I'm hostile then. If I was a dealer no occasional user would walk out the door with a MS660, he/she would be carrying a saw engineered for the occasional user no more no less.

Stihl's website:
occasional use, commercial use, and professional use.

Any more questions? :hmm3grin2orange:

Yes. Which features, exactly, make a pro saw more dangerous than a homeowner saw? Also, where do I get a fire breathing pro saw. I am a pro, not a pro logger, but a professional none the less.

• Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada has the largest number of bars per capita than anywhere else in the world.

• You are more likely to get attacked by a cow than a shark.
This shows your research is flawed. I can show you towns in WI that will beat the pants off this:

Halifax & Dartmouth
Licences: 655
Population: 282,000
Drinking establishments per 1,000 population: 2.3

From some random website.

My hometown has 3 bars and 595 residents, or 5.0/1000. Not counting the outlying bars that aren't inside the city limits.

The cow stat, I believe to be true, though.

I have no agenda.

Agenda sent.

What kind of oil do you guys use ?

I like peanut oil, some say canola is better, but they're wrong.

OP here...I can't believe the discussion that this thread has generated...I have decided to buy a 251 if they come out before September. If not, I will buy a 261. Luckily my house is in a field, and the biggest tree in my back 5 is 14", and if I get into anything over my head at the shack I can just go back and have a sauna. I will not be buying a 10' pro saw in case my neighbor has a mammoth tree fall on his house, and I promise to wear chaps. Can we just get back to muffler mods, chains for the 251, or something useful?

We certainly could get back on track. It's not as much fun, but we could.

I know nothing about the not out yet 251, heck I don't own a single Stihl. The 261 gets good reviews, unless you want a really fast 50cc saw, then you'll have to look at Swedish saws, or the other Germans (Dolmar). If you're not worried about 1/4 second of cut time, the 261 is a good solid machine that will last as long as you'd like.

Chains, if you can handle a "pro" chain - :poke: Stihl's RM series chain is about as good as it gets out of the box. For low kickback chain, RM3 is the same cutter on a "safety" chain.

As mentioned by me earlier, you don't need a pro saw and the 251 will serve your needs for the next decades, with proper care of course! The 251 has a few good reviews in german threads. But the situation is the same as here, the focus is on pro saws. An alternative would be the 271. I have read very good reviews about them. Similar power as the 261 just a little bit heavier and less "pro" like the 251. Either will make you very happy!

I wouldn't start thinking about muffler mods on a brand new saw, if it is your only saw! Because if you need "warrenty" work they will certainly frown on any "fixing" of a saw. The chances are high that your claims will be declined!

For chains, just stay with the Stihl stuff and you will be happy. No need to worry about "pro" full comp blah blah blah, the normal semi chisel safety chain will make you equally happy and there is a reason that this chain type is made for beginners like you. The cutting speed differences are only, depending on wood size, a few fractions of a second to a few seconds. So nothing to worry about. You ain't a pro logger and you don't sound like your very in stress to get the job done.

Further if you donot intend to use your saw often, think about the pre mixed fuels(Truefuel, Aspen, etc.). YES they are expensive! But they have a shelf life of five years. There are many problems with the fuel available at gas stations nowadays so that might be an alternative for you. If you have major cutting to do you can always switch back to regular mix, but the last filling switch back to the premixed so that your saw doesn't have any problems during storage. Alternativly you can always empty the fuel tank and let the saw "idle!!!" till it is empty. That will have the same conserving effect.

and don't forget if you don't post pictures of your purchase and action shots, a group of loony AS guys is going to come by and take away your saw.... :D

Good luck!

Sounds like a good choice for your cutting needs. As far as the Hijack goes, this is what happens when some ####### starts crapping on other posters for their opinions. It is rare to see three mods post in the same thread and not see someone sent to banned camp. I guess he didn't step far enough over the line when he was replying to Gologit. BTW Gologit, Steel Sawing and Steve NW WI are mods here.

Don't be discouraged by the train wreck that this thread turned into. For some the opportunity to call someone like RUSHNBOBO out for being an ####### is all in a days fun. :D

That saw is all you need and will probably last you forever if its taken care of. These guys who are saying you need 70 or 80 cc's to cut a few trees are baked.

I'd get some semi chisel chain if I was you. It will stay sharp longer until you get the sharpening thing down.
