For the occasions that I needed a 27" bar in hardwood, my CS620 does fine as long as you don't lean on her. I normally keep a 20" bar on her. She's happy that way but still runs nice with the 27.

I go back to the original title and post. In 30"-40" midwest hardwoods, a 70cc saw is probably the best answer. I can find an old school K095 28" bar for my ported 5100s or 2159 and it will "handle" it but big wood needs big torque.
Of course if money is the only criteria then the 620 Echo might suffice, but then the 70cc Jonsered comes into play for pretty much the same money.

Dolmar PS420/421 3/8 lp 6 tooth spur sprocket will fit a 5100 and 6100. I have run the 6 tooth spur on a 5100 with full size 3/8, it gives them some grunt.

3/8 is all I usually run on my 51xxs. Usually 60DL but they'll handle larger. Dad ran 70 on his stock 5105 without complaint.
My cousins CS590 is absolutely a demon with a 20" bar...I have no doubt it would run 25" bar just fine. I did open up the muffler a bit, removed the limiter caps, and tuned it..... for $400, I don't think it can be beat.
Next question if a saw has 3" felling spikes does a 24" bar count as a 21" bar?
For better or worse I did pick up the makita it came with a 20" bar and 2 new chains. The spikes on it are huge it actually has less cutting room than the 18 bar on my 271.

off topic, but can I get the little dawg for my ps5105? The two big dawgs are ridiculous. I was contemplating cutting them down..my 16" bar becomes a 14" bar..
6421 once I am through these big logs in hoping i can stay with 20" logs. It is a lot of hard slow work splitting big logs. If I am wrong than i will put on the big top end.
you made the best choice out of what you compared.
