25 up and running

Been really busy around here but got a few minutes to mess with a saw yesterday. Big thanks out to Moss Man for supplying it to me!

Got the little Poulan 25 out to see what it needed. Turns out someone sometime ago replaced the fuel line on it and didnt run it through the loop beside the flywheel and it didnt take too well to laying on the cyl fin.

So after a fuel line, carb diaphragms, air filter and a fuel cap duckbill the exahust stack was soon barking in all its glory! This thing runs very well!

Sharpend the chain but it was raining here so no wood cutting with it yet.

Seems like I can't remember the last time I sharpend a 1/4" pitch chain! Also it never seemed to take as long as it did to do one either. 76 drive links and lots of cutters for a 14" chain.

Nice job Mark, thats an early one! I had one with a stack on it and boy did it bark. Mine had the 1/4" on it as wel with the 14" hardnose. That clutch cover tells the story, that XXV still has the olive leaves! That saw didnt see much wood.

That seems to be how the Post Office is trying to save money, especially on non priority mail. It sits in the Post Office until a shipment is going out, hopefully in your direction and they add yours to it. If it goes in the opposite direction, that Post Office holds it until something comes south, then they try again. I had a carburetor kit take several weeks to get here; I could have driven there in one day and picked it up, but it would've cost more. Priority mail usually is three days or less but costs more also.

I've ordered from the OHIO area before and it never took this long for transit. Update. It is no longer moving farther away from me. It left Detroit and went to JAX, FL. A 2 1/2 hour drive south of me. Yep, it went right past me. Pretty much like sending cross town mail on Saturday here. It seems the local sorter is shut down on Saturdays so everything is dumped in a truck and carried to JAX for sorting and then sent back to Savannah. It is better to hold and send on following Monday because it will get to local destination a day quicker than that sent on Saturday. Think someone at the PO doesn't want to work on Saturday's anymore?

245 Tank gasket

Thought I would post this in case someone else needed a fuel tank gasket for a 245 Poulan. Mine was leaking, but I did get it sealed up. So far, so good.
In the mean time I checked on Order Tree, and found they had a new gasket in stock for these. I was shocked. So, ordered one of those and a clutch removal tool for this saw also. Both seem to be well made.:)

Gregg,

Gregg,

Gregg, is the tank gasket cork or what material? What are the part #'s for the gasket and the clutch tool? Thanks!

Steve

Another great job Mark!

THAT'S why YOU are the King of the Poulans!

Mike

:) i have a 25 with a problem so i will ask the king and his court about it.
saw runs good, put a b&c on it and adjust properly and the problems begin.
my thot is the pressure on the shaft is creating a seal leak because of a worn bearing on that side ?
if it is the bearing is it worth trying to replace it along with the seal ?
tnx..

4000 officially done!

I waited and looked long and hard for a good 20" bar for my 4000, it was wearing a nice 16" windsor, but like Mike (moparman) says 16" is Super 25 territory. So short of finding an NOS Poulan bar, I think this bar fit the bill. Its an NOS Oregon Power Match from about 1985. The saw is an '85 so its perfect. I like the old school bar on this saw (or an saw for that matter) and it is balanced perfect! The best part is this is a Poulan bar mount so I dont need the spacer. Rain today, Hopefully Ill get it in some wood soon.

Ron, "problems begin" is not very specific is it?

Steve, Here is a pic of both. The gasket #530019005 and the clutch tool #530031004
The gasket seems to be like the original cork material.

Gregg,

Greg, dont forget to cut a small piece of that extra cork and make a cork washer to go between the tank halves around that center bolt. You'll thank me later when it dont leak up the screw and out on top of the cover.

I thought I mentioned before that those gaskets could be ordered.

I'm going to order one of those clutch tools myself and hang up my homemade one. LOL

No Sir it is not..
exhibits symptoms of seal leak/carb adjustment..running poorly..
with chain loose it runs fine..tip it any wich way and runs fine..
tighten chain and like a diff saw..just turns to poo !
using a b&c from another 25..
leads me to believe that by tightning the chain that little extra side force is enough to make the bearing ride rough or open the seal a little ?
idles rough, boggs, wot stumbles,etc..cant adjust carb easily.
tnx..

Yes, I do recall you saying that the gasket could be found. :dizzy: and the stories of trying to make one. There was a lot of info pretty much going in one ear and out the other that morning we were all looking at this saw..LOL

I got the leak on it stoped, for now anyway. So, I'm not going to replace it right away, but have it just in case I need it.
I took the "parts saw" apart, to see how everything goes together on these.
I had a heck of a time getting the clutch off of it. Lets just say, I wouldn't have wanted that video taped! :D Combination of parts loosener, 2 nails, and a big screw driver finally prevailed. When I found that the tool was available, I pounced on that..lol
As much as I like the 245, it sure ain't no picnic working on one as the 3400-4000 series of saws.

Thanks for the past advice, and I'm sure more that will be needed in the future!

Sounds like it could be the clutch bearing. Also are you sure your running the correct pitch chain.

Well I have to say that I have never heard of one running bad after you tighten the chain! LOL

Seems like if a crank brg were that bad you could grab it by hand and move it to see.

That saw does use needle brgs on the crank which by nature run looser then ball brgs so I guess your theory could be right. Time to vac test it to be sure.
