My barn fresh Craftsman cleaned up pretty good.
Now who can tell me what it is. I'm guessing a 3400?

Yep that is about normal. 120 to 125 seems to be where they are.

Don't judge it until you run it.
One thing I noticed, if there was ever a saw that needs a muffler mod it's this one. Wow is all I can say, I couldn't figure out where the exhaust comes out until I took the muffler off completely.

Thanks, Brian

Well I am glad I didn't have to do it that way, but when I get to redoing my craftsmen 3.3s and 3.7s I will give it a whirl. Thanks. I don't know why I am so much more enthusiastic about digging into the yellow ones.

Would you be willing to share your opinion on adding a chain brake to this saw? Don
3.3 and 3.7 don't have external impulse lines. they impulse directly through the carb. no impulse line

Nice saw Brian, cleaned up good! Compression sounds about right for that saw and yes a muff mod on that style muffler helps quite a bit. My 3400, 3800 and 3.7 all have a muff mod on them.

Exactly. This particular saw is one of the "underrated" 3400's. It's actually 3.4ci/56cc and shares all parts (save the decals and possibly the b/c) with a 3.4 labeled Craftsman. Was falsely rated as 3.0ci to meet a lower price point. A case of getting 'more value for your money' than you were expecting.

For some reason AS is showing up totally screwy on my computer :badpc:. I didn't realize that this Craftsman model 358.36081 was an intentionally mislabeled 3400.

I figured as much. However I never could determine which Craftsman is a 3700 or 3800.

I think the rule is, grey 3.7 is a 3800, red 3.7 is a 3700. In Canada, it may be different. I do have a grey 3.7 that is a 3800.

Their goofy numbering system doesn't help. Up here it's worse. The 358.XXXXXX are there but the numbers here don't relate to anything on the Sears US site.

As a side note,

I was using some winter grade bar oil in a my grey Craftsman 3800 the other day to cut up some firewood. Does it ever pump that stuff! I guess it's closer to the SAE 30 weight oil Poulan recommended for that series.
