What could be better on a Friday evening than a ported 066BB and some hotrod parts to add? Parts like a velocity stack and a K&N filter with outerwear. I've used K&N filters with Outerwears for years with great results. The Outerwears make all the difference in the world. I don't want this to turn into a K&N bashing thread. Check out the mods and see what you think.

What I like. I don't know the science, but I've read that a v-stack adds torque to the powerband of an engine. That's always a good thing, especially on a BB work saw. I love the 45* angle built into the filter. It keeps it out of the way of your throttle hand. When used with an Outerwear, a K&N is easier to maintain than a foam filter. Less messy to boot.

What I don't like. I need to make a call back to the parts provider. Does he really intend for me to run totally without the filter backing plate? I don't think I like that. What about the filter compensation port on the top of the carb? I can't see leaving that wide open like that. Perhaps I can get or make some longer carb studs and mod the filter backing plate so that I can run it along with the v-stack. Thoughts on that?

Overall, I'm pretty excited about this mod. I've never liked the design of the filter such that ever time you loosen the cover and remove the filter, dust goes all over everything. Compressed air is not always nearby. Also, the first tank I ran on this ported BB, I sucked a fair amount of very fine dust past the filter. This particular saw needs the cover to be really tight or it doesn't seal. With this new setup, I just knock any loose stuff off the Outerwear, loosen the filter clamp and pull off the filter. There's a lot less opportunity for dust to get into the engine.

Brad I think Steve changes the top plate on the carb's with that filter. The old style 066 carb plate should be the ticket. ;)

Nice look'n saw, I don't think you can pass that one off as stock now though.

Lookin' pretty mean isn't it:clap: So does Steve intend for it to be run without a filter base?. Is he in the shop on Saturdays?

I'll admit, it does kind of ruin that smooth curvy lines of the 066 doesn't it. It's still fun to mess with though. I could get creative and cut out a hole in the filter cover. But then I'd have nothing to screw it onto. Hmmmm.:dizzy:

You will get crap in the intake with K&N setup. Do some research. Been proven over and over, They flow better of course, but they dont filter as well.

Yeah, most of his 660's run without the filter base, you'd be surprised how little stuff actually collects in there. He's usually in the shop until 2:00 on Saturdays give him a call.

I've seen some guys fit the filter base back on with some mods and even the filter cover back on too.

That 361 that Glenn (pipeliner) had at the GTG at Bill's house had the filter cover fitted back on, looked pretty sweet.

I remember that. I'm not sure how he pulled that off getting the filter cover to stay on.

I don't buy it. I ran them for year on my mega built Banshee solely in the sand dunes and never once had a problem. The key is to use an Outerwear.

Prefilter? Ok, thats a must. I never saw a prefilter (Outerwear) that looked like that on a K&N setup.

I couldn't leave UGLY alone, so I put a bag, errrr, a cover over her head.

No just to figure out how to attach the cover. There might be room for some hoop-n-loop fasteners in there some where. I'm committed now. Can't go back to the stock filter unless I buy a new cover.
