What could be better on a Friday evening than a ported 066BB and some hotrod parts to add? Parts like a velocity stack and a K&N filter with outerwear. I've used K&N filters with Outerwears for years with great results. The Outerwears make all the difference in the world. I don't want this to turn into a K&N bashing thread. Check out the mods and see what you think.
What I like. I don't know the science, but I've read that a v-stack adds torque to the powerband of an engine. That's always a good thing, especially on a BB work saw. I love the 45* angle built into the filter. It keeps it out of the way of your throttle hand. When used with an Outerwear, a K&N is easier to maintain than a foam filter. Less messy to boot.
What I don't like. I need to make a call back to the parts provider. Does he really intend for me to run totally without the filter backing plate? I don't think I like that. What about the filter compensation port on the top of the carb? I can't see leaving that wide open like that. Perhaps I can get or make some longer carb studs and mod the filter backing plate so that I can run it along with the v-stack. Thoughts on that?
Overall, I'm pretty excited about this mod. I've never liked the design of the filter such that ever time you loosen the cover and remove the filter, dust goes all over everything. Compressed air is not always nearby. Also, the first tank I ran on this ported BB, I sucked a fair amount of very fine dust past the filter. This particular saw needs the cover to be really tight or it doesn't seal. With this new setup, I just knock any loose stuff off the Outerwear, loosen the filter clamp and pull off the filter. There's a lot less opportunity for dust to get into the engine.
