So I still have a bunch of HUGE oak logs that I need to cut up for firewood, about 5 of them and they range in size from 40" to 50" and between 12 and 20 ft. long and are rock hard. I would like to cut these up for firewood, they are too gnarly and partly rotted to use for lumber, but I don't think my 575 quite has the nuts for a job this size. So I am looking at some other options.

Here's the specs I'd like.

Run at least a 32" bar with reasonable power

Weight, AV and cutting speed are not a huge issue, I don't plan on using this saw for anything other than cutting up huge logs.

My budget is about $600 from Uncle Sam.

I'm looking at bigger Homies and Mac's in the 90+ cc range, but they're hard to come by. An 064/066/660 would be ideal but a bit out of my price range. What do y'all think?

highly recommend an 064 in excellent condition. there's been several rebuilt 064 that sold well within that price range.

beside affordable price, 064 is barely heavier (5 oz) than 460, which has much less grunt. 064 has one of the best power to weight ratio of any saw and are very dependable.

in short a highly desirable saw!!!

than again... if you are a husky person... look for 394xp in good condition. just scored one on craigslist for $200. but deals like that are hard to find and goes quick!

I was thinking 390/395 too, but all I seem to find on Fleabay are expensive new ones. An 064 would fit the bill nicely too. I'd kind of like something I can still get parts for.

i think you should buy the saw i am selling in the trading post

I was watching a 395xp that went off just a day or so ago for less than $500.

Parts availability and relative abundance of saws is the reason I've gone with 066/660s. It started with one for the mill, then another won in drawing, and now a project...:dizzy:

I think you should stick with something modern, and a major brand ala Husqvarna/Stihl. Since you already have Husky saws, I'd still with them. If you buy an old saw, it's going to be a project at some point.

totally agree with going with husky... if that's what you normally go with.

my preference is Stihl... got a fleet of em... just scored a 394xp. that big husky feels like a duck out of water. 394xp is an excellent saw... it's what you are used to.

If it were me(no I wood not own a 575) put a 32" full skip on the 575, richen up the carb and go slow.

You also need a 066/660 just to see what you have been missing in the Stihl lineup.

You can find a used 395xp for 600. If I had to buy a saw that could run 32" bar and have the power to run it in very hard wood. I would go 395xp. I have an 066, but wouldn't take it over the Husky.
Other saws I would consider would be a 394xp or a 288xp.

There's a 066 for sale in the marketplace for 400$ w/ 32" bar.

I tried to buy the saw the guy is new to A-S site . I asked him about cod or what kind of guaranty do I have once I pay him the monies. so I said I would send the money through pay-pal but I wanted is address and phone number. he never called me or even emailed me back so If I were you I would be extra careful. I,m not saying anything bad so maybe he already sold the saw. but there you go . I thought that was a great deal to but only if you get the saw!!! best of luck Bill:jawdrop: :jawdrop:
