In the atv/dirt bike world it takes double the cc's of a 4 stroke to compete with the 2 strokes. 4 strokes also cost ALOT more to rebuild then 2 strokes. Its amazing how many people buy a rmz, yzf, kxf, crf with the false impression that since its a 4 stroke, they will run for ever with little care for the motor. Then end up grenading the motor and finding out its gonna cost them $1000 to $1500+ just to get it running again. There are LOTS of riders that are selling there thumpers to go back to 2 smokers. There just WAYYYY too expensive to keep running.

Another thing that is slowely comming into the dirt bike scene is battery electric power. KTM already has a prototype.:dizzy: I forsee some day in the future we will also see 4 stroke saws and crazy battery powered saw. Heck who knows we might be using lasers to cut down trees before too long.:dizzy:

That's not even remotely true. There isn't a 2 stroke rider on the "pro" circuit that could hold a candle to one on a 4 stroke. The rate of "grenading" is far lower than what you see with 2 cycles. I'd take a thumper over a smogger any day.

Honda and Kawasaki don't even make a 2 stroke mx bike (lite or supercross). The other two... can't really compete with the 4 strokes.

Yep, Ill agree with that. 2 stroke bikes appear to be on the way out.

FWIW, I got a 05 rmz450 and never turned a bolt on it, and its had the :censored: :censored: ran outta it. I know when it comes time to rebuild it its gonna cost A little more, but it don't bother me. If it was a smoker Id just about bet that it would have already needed a rebuild, if not 2.

Exactly right, the technology they put into the 4 stroke race bikes is amazing. I had a yzf 250 that i raced on a novice level for 2 years and the only thing i did was adjust the valves. Bike was running great the day i sold it.

A good friend of mine just sold an '03 YZ450F that he got brand new in '03... It probably had a good ~200+ hours on it with just oil changes... When he adjusted the valves not too long before he sold it, they were all a little tight, but not all that far out...

The reason why the "pro" level riders don't ride 2 strokes anymore is cause they will loose there sponsorship. They have no choice.
On a certin thumper website forum there have been lots of blownup 4 strokes. Plus alot of them are switching to 2 strokes cause there lighter and cheaper to maintain.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about... they won't "loose" their sponsorships. They also will not LOSE their sponsorships just for riding a 2 cycle. There isn't one contract in the industry that forbids a rider from riding either a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. If there is a factory rider that wants a 2 stroke, you know darn well that the factory is going to do whatever they can to please the rider.

4 strokes are easier to maintain, and cost of ownership is cheaper in the long run.

So you can ride either one in the same circuit? JW, i'm not too bright on the subject.

Not even close, 4 strokes have more all around power. My girlfriends big wheel 150r will eat up a 125 2 stroke any day of the week and its not even a big bike!

Why do think everyone stopped making the 2 stroke motorcycle? It wasnt because of epa trust me. If it was they would of worked ALOT harder.

Yes 3 of the big 4 still make 2 strokes but they havent been changed in years. Except the graphics.

Yes you can a few years ago there was a pro riding in the lites class on a 125cc, he didnt do to well.

Although James Stewart rode a 125cc and killed the competition he was just a freak of nature, but he now rides a 4 stroke.

Personally i think it would be cool to see a 4 stroke chainsaw, and see how it stacks up against a 2 smoker.

All I know is ATV's and I know a 450 YFZ Suzuki will dust a 350 twin banshee on top end speed. But the banshee can hang good thru about 3 gears. After that, it's no contest.

Four stroke chainsaws been out for a while.... they are a little heavy..... but dam, they are fast!! :)

Its all about the rider as well, unless its a straight line drag.

4 strokes are simply better! They could always put a 4 stroke rc airplane engine in the chainsaws as well. They rev to the moon and just because its a 4 stroke doesnt mean it needs motor oil. They would run on glow fuel...

This would look sick hanging off a stihl haha

Yea, straight line is what I was referring to. Lol.

I'd hate to run the saw with that motor for 10 hours a day. :jawdrop:

Noise would be deafening, they really dont vibrate THAT much. They were about the same as a 2 stroke engine.

Btw a YFZ is made by Yamaha ;)

I think if they made a 4 stroke chainsaw, the biggest drawback would be weight and price. Trimmers are being made as 4 strokes, so its only a matter of time before they start making 4 stroke chainsaws. It should be interesting to see who produces the first one and how it does.

Yes you can, 125 can ride with the 250 4 strokes. 250 2 strokes run with the 450 4 strokes.

Now, THIS engine should be in a chainsaw...

hey, i know its a topic for another forum.. but ARE YOU CRAZY!!!?
banshees are still the king of 4 wheelers and hold every major speed record there is for stock based engine 4 wheelers. banshees are the reason they have 4 stroke class and 2 stroke classes when it comes to quad drags. the closest competition out there right now are the big raptors, 900+cc's turbo/nos

i hope to god they dont put 4 strokes in chainsaws , the hippies never cease to amaze though, so you never know, everyone better start lifting weights to be able to carry them around the woods.

2 stroke 500's used to be in the "open" class. Very powerful class, those went out long ago. There are 3 suspects as to why the class is no more... you can blame yamaha, suzuki and/or the AMA.
