The weather outside is frightful but the fire is so delightful

Well, we're in the middle of a pretty mean snowstorm so I decided to go outside and take some pics, kind of document the storm for posterity and because I'm fascinated by storms in general. I figure if a bunch of us in the storm post pics and updates this could be pretty cool. Here's how it looked here at noon.

A shot from my shed

Wind is about 18 mph, gusting to 25 mph and snow drifts are 2'-3' most places with a larger drift almost totally covering my 5' tall "to-do" log pile. Yesterday I brought home a big Elm trunk and cut it into rounds just before dark. You can see it next to the splitter. I was going to split it up after dark but I figured I could do it first thing in the morning before the storm hit. Bad call, LOL!

Just a gentle snowfall here by Mercer, a fluffy 6". I'm gonna go plow with the polaris, I'm bored as hell. When is saturday NFL games?

After looking at your picture of your OWB it makes me so happy my boiler is in my basement and there is a large supply of dry firewood in my garage.
Up here in Central Wisconsin it is really miserable outside. I'm not even going to try to plow the drive because it will just drift shut again.

I went out in it this morning, cut up, split and tossed a Douglas Fir down the coal shoot. You boys out west were talkin' them up so I thought I'd try it. This one blew down a couple years ago but was held up off the ground by branches so it was dry, clean and ready for burning. Measured 25-inches at the base, provided me with well over a half cord... we'll see.

Man nothing even remotely like that here. I'm 20 miles north of the Ohio line and I was outside all day in nothing more than a sweatshirt. My neighbors boy took off about noon with 2 sleds in tow so it must be snowing well north off us.
Around here they're calling for rain then 2 to 4 by morning.
Hell the ground isn't even frozen yet.

I'm about 20 miles south of Dude-We have gotten 14-16" of snow and is tapering off. Winds are turning from the east to the northwest and temps are falling like a rock. Forecast is -5 to -10F tonite with a high around Zero. Sure is nice sitting in the house while the wife is outside on the JD tractor blowing the snow!:heart::heart:

Nothing but a wet and miserable 35 degrees here on the other side of the pond. Temps are dropping though.

Bring it on. I'm sick of wet sloppy snow, and muddy slush. after just two days of it.

Stay safe!

Ya sure that its a Doug Fir, a 25 incher should get near a cord an a half of wood, with out any limb wood, if there is any...

Took this shot shortly after noon, probably had a foot on the ground then. The drift on the roof doesn't look as impressive as it does in person. It's about 2' above the peak. For those that might be wondering, the chimney's over on the back side of the house, but my bathroom vents are somewhere under there.

Except for a trip to the store for fermented malt beverages and some munchies, and an hour or so on the tractor "rough plowing" enough for a car to get in and out if need be, I've been tinkering in the house all day. When I'm around, I keep the fire small and fill fairly often. Here's a shot inside the old Woodchuck today:

Snow's pretty well done, but wind is coming out of the North now, guessing 20-25mph and temp is headed south, currently 15° here, but 69° in the kitchen (coldest part of the house) and I'm lounging around in shorts and barefoot. Gotta love that wood heat right now!

We just got a report from one of our sons who lives very near Marshfield: He had to go somewhere this late this afternoon so took off in his 4x4 pickup - encountered 4' drifts in the road and had to figure out another way to get where he had to go.

Just read in our online news paper that 146 miles of interstate hwy. 94 is closed due to snow & being impassable.

Some of this is headed our way starting around midnight. Hmmm... we just bought a used snowblower this afternoon - I think we should get that off the trailer and 'staged' for tomorrow. We had rain all afternoon today.

My wife took some video at about 3:30 pm but I have to cut it together and convert it before uploading. I just went out to check the fire and snow is drifted up to the door and the draft fan was full of ice & snow, frozen solid! Temperature was down to 140 but plenty of coals to fan once I got the draft fan thawed out and it began spinning again. A couple of minutes with the MAPP gas torch and I was in business. The wind has picked up a bit and my wood stack is completely covered by a drift coming off the yard behind it. Temp. is 12F with a -4F wind chill. Weather.com says 20 mph wind gusting to 30 mph and I believe it. My windows are rattling loudly but the house is still pretty warm and cozy. Snow has almost completely buried my log pile and a couple of cars in the yard. Drifts up to 4' deep across the driveway and up against the barn wall and even though the snow has let up the wind is still really pushing it around heavily.

Minnesota pulled the plows off the road earlier because it was impossible to keep up with the snow. At least we're pretty well set for provisions out here but I couldn't imagine trying to go anywhere in this stuff even if I had to. It would be a dangerous time to get stuck in the ditch.

Gonna hit the sack, so I can get up early and finish clearing the driveway and yard. It's gonna take a bit of doing with the loader tractor. I've been spoiled with the plow on the quad, but it doesn't have enough traction to push this much snow.

Think we're heading to the local establishment tomorrow noon to watch da Packers, stupid MN stations are showing some High School game. There's some spots that will no doubt have impressive drifts. I'll bring the camera along.

Outside temp has dropped 5° in the last couple hours, and will continue to. Inside temp has gained a couple degrees. I ALMOST feel bad for the propane burning folks, ALMOST!
