I cannot get this saw to idle or run at low rpm. Ive tried everything i can think of but need some help.
compression 145
new fuel filter and lines
impulse line
new carb
set air gap on coil at .010? correct? set with business card
checked all wiring
Saw hits within first few pulls and then on half choke it tries to start but will not unless you turn the choke off and hold the throttle open. It also cuts very good and dosent run away like there is an air leak. I even swapped carbs off a good running 660 and still the same problem.
What have i missed?

I would go back to a base line setting for the low speed fuel screw(needle)screw it in clockwise seat gently and turn it out 1 turn. might just be too rich at idle. If that is the case you will likley need to adjust the high speed screw as well start adn 1 and 1/4 out from seated

good luck

Sounds like an issue with your throttle shaft. Not the metal linkage, rather the plastic shaft that goes across the front of the hand grip. "Half choke" is actually full throttle without choke. That should act the same as when you are starting in run position with finger on full throttle. If it's not, try looking at that shaft. Took a good look at it in different positions and learn what it's trying to accomplish. Then you can troubleshoot it.

Thanks Mike, i will check that out. Nothing else makes sense being its all new parts.

Check your intake boot real close and your cylinder base screws. Both can afford a small enough leak to reek havoc on idle but not full throttle.

Ill get on that this morning while the wife is cooking the bird. Thanks Scooterbum ive heard nothing but good things about you. Everyone says your a heck of a nice guy.

I`m working on a 064 also. It didn`t pass the pressure test and is leaking at the crank seals. Pressure and vac test it. It is better to test the saw than to burn it up. I also have a cover on the carb that needs replaced because it is cracked. The cracked cover when tightened was binding up the choke. The Stihl dear can`t find it in their IPL`s. I`ll have to get it off the net.

Find it in your own IPL and just supply them the part number to order. That's what I do.

I have the part number. They just can`t find it. I done a search here and someone said it won`t be in their system. And sure enough it is not in their IPL`s. The part number is on the cover. I have found it on the net. I just need to order it. Even after putting new crank seals in i think you should pressure and vac test it. It is easy to do and you got the saw apart all ready. Do the vac test first, then the pressure. I use soapy water on my pressure test and do that last so when you do a vac test it don`t suck the water in. Don`t forget to turn the crank during the test.

Im sure this saw is the DEVIL. After a very long drive to a cool saw shop down in southern Indiana, i came back with new crank seals, intake boot, and impulse hose. I had already tore the saw completely down for the second time to double check everything. Seals went in and i double checked to make sure the lip didnt get flipped. Oiler, clutch, and flywheel installed so far so good. Installed the top end and made sure to install a new paper base gasket with alittle 1194 for a good seal. Intake and impulse line installed and double checked for a good seal. Now that the "DEVIL" is back together again i fired it up. Runs alittle rough so i tune carb and it will idle but its around 3200 rpm on the tach. Tune the idle to 2800 and AGIAN its runs for about 5 seconds then dies. Start it back up and turn the idle back to 3200, now it idles rough but idles, and the chain only creeps alittle. Man is this one a pain in my butt.:msp_mad:
