From personal experience, if you don't want to use the crappy circlips that come with a meteor piston for a 036/360 you will be in for a bit of a treasure hunt. Meteor clips got bent on the install rather easily (I am well aware that many do not even bother with them) . Stock 036/360 circlips are made of too thin of a gauge wire to adequately fit in the groove on the AM piston (despite the opening being machined to fit the 10mm pin). Solution, I had to order Stihl OEM 11mm circlips for a 361. 10 tanks of gas later and nothing has let loose yet.

Same with the 026. An OEM Stihl clip is too thin.

This is why I sell my saws on ebay. God forbid if something should go wrong, I don't need a newb making a thread about it. (not referring to the op of this thread)

I don't think I've ever had any dealings with Neal, but from the years I've been here, all I hear is good. I'm sure he's done hundreds of saws and this is the first I've heard of one having problems. I'm sure he feels like crap and is scratching his head wondering what happened. I'm sure he'll make it right.

I don't use a bunch of aftermarket parts, but I've never had any issues with anything. There's obviously an issue with the integrity of some of the parts in my opinion. Now so more than ever it seems. If I had to guess... poor steel in the clips and rings. Take Modified Marks 441 ordeal. I know Mark personally, and if I had to rely on a saw to save my life, I wouldn't hesitate to have him build me one. There was obviously a major malfunction with the parts he tried. Most likely from the same stuff Neal used. I'm sure we'll see more problems from other AM kits if guys will post it.

Stuff happens. A bad batch of steel is all it takes. How many circlips or rings can be made out of a ton of steel? I'm sure the QC is tighter with major companies, but it could happen to Stihl, Husky or any other OEM company.

Here's a quick story... not about saws, but bad QC none the less.
About 6 years ago, I was checking my turkey gun sights before season. I was using Winchester Supreme HV turkey loads for many years. I had just bought a new box of 10 shells. I set up a piece of 3/4" plywood with paper on it for a target in my yard, went back to 40yrds and shot. When I walked up to the target, all that was there was 1 perfect round hole the size of a quarter!! Almost like I shot a slug. I found the wad another 30/40yrds beyond the target. Several more shots... same results. I managed to find all the wads. I had a few shells in my vest from the year prior. I shot them and got perfect results.

I found the wads from the 3 shells that patterned good from the year before. I compared them to the new ones and found out that they were only cut half way down the sides, not letting the "wings" open up to slow the wad. The shot stayed in the wad acting like a slug. I reported my findings to a couple friends of mine that I knew had just bought the same shells. They had the same issues. I bagged everything up, sent it to Winchester with a letter explaining what happened. They sent me a $50 coupon.

Before this ordeal, I had all they faith in the world in these shells. I recommended them to many people and used them with perfect success for years.
This was a major company with a major problem.

I don't know either the buyer or the seller here. Nothing against either one of them. Like most people here, I've never heard a bad word said about Neal.

Anyway, my take on this is, if you are a total newbie to saws, which the buyer obviously is, don't buy a secondhand saw. Go get a new one with a warranty. Then when little things like loose bar nuts happen, you can take it back to the dealer, have it fixed, and learn a little about the saw in the process.

Nothing against newbies, we were all one at some point and people tend to forget that. Its easy for most of us to grab a wrench or a screwdriver and make minor adjustments but not so easy if you don't know anything at all about a saw. That's where the warranty comes in. Even if its a box store Poulan, learn a bit about saws first. A guy just learning doesn't need a 346, as much as everybody wants one.

AIt's one thing to question a circlip, it's another to question another's integrity. Starting this thread was an attempt to lure nmurph out. He's obviously a bigger man than I. I was told by a wise man " this is my damn fire, go start your own." None of us have any business starting threads to continue this already handled problem. Neal has been nothing but helpful to myself and anyone else for that matter. So let him take care of HIS business and we can discuss the circlip failure. I honestly think the biggest problem of the day has been a faulty tampon and the inability to let this go.

This will probably rub a few people the wrong way but here goes...

As a site we have always had sponsors, and this is certainly for the better, they keep the site alive.

There are a number of sponsors who are fairly low key. They barely solicit business and most people refer others to them.

Of late some sponsors have, in my eyes, somewhat aggressively sought business. There's lots of chiming in in threads, and then their customers line up along side them and say yeah yeah, so and so is really good.

It's a tough item to discuss because the sponsors are paying money essentially to do what they are doing--and I don't think any guidelines on advertising are imposed, or at least not enforced.

However, lately, especially with new people to the site, there have been strong, strong recommendations and pressures for them to buy a saw from so and so and send it to x and y. While they are ultimately buying used saws, and/or having custom work done, after a while I think that if they are going to be so strongly recommended then when something goes wrong you can't just wipe your hands of it and say tough. I'm not saying anyone is in the wrong.

But I do think that we could tone down some of the fanfare in the threads. A quick mention of so and so does this, or maybe even better, just a PM. If you think highly of a sponsor and think they might do good for someone send them a PM. Not only will it probably benefit the sponsor more, but it gets away from some of the back and forth and open sollicitation in the threads. I just think at times it's in poor taste. That's just me.

There are guidelines and they are enforced... most never see or hear of them. You are correct, sponsors pay money to advertise there goods/services at the top of the page or in threads they start or respond to. If I run a special and don't tell you, you may never click on my ad. I happen to be more like you.....

Work a full time job and flip saws (job #2) for extra money. Was tired of spending all my extra money on OEM parts and found another way to save a couple bucks on things I felt I could. Post here because I like this place, the guys here and then the aftermarket parts thing (job #3) came later. Hoping to pass along a good deal. No one is arm wrestled into buying anything and there are lots of sponsors who say nothing and then there are a couple like me...

Knowledge is a good thing and when I know more.... I can make better choices. Telling others of those things makes us stronger as a community and I believe that most sponsors have nothing to hide. I really think that some here need to grow up a little, some comments are posted in a haste out of frustration/emotion and after a not-so-nice post and often the case, those thought's have been interpreted incorrectly.

It's all good, some not so good, either way, I believe it's part of the beast.

Are sponsors allowed to start sales only threads in the Chainsaw forum? For example, is Baileys or Northwood allowed to start a thread to list monthly specials'

I don't see why they wouldn't. Most of the more successful sponsors, those that do a real business, have their own sponsored forum so there's no real reason for them to do more than they already are.

But if they wanted to put a post in the forum about a special I suppose they could.

What's your point here Brad? Would you like to have a sponsored forum? We can fix you right up.

It seems that these aftermarket circlips are having some problems. Why wouldnt the builder just use OEM clips. You could buy alot of clips for the price of a few topends.

Stories about failing aftermarket circlips have been circulating on here for a long time, but no so much lately, until now....

I just go by a store with a large assortment of inner snap rings and get a pair that fit snug, why the piston makers don't use them I'll never know.

Could be that they are concerned about the extra mass slinging it out. Same as the extra weight of the ears some are concerned about. I don't know whether it amounts to any real difference or not.
