This will probably rub a few people the wrong way but here goes...
As a site we have always had sponsors, and this is certainly for the better, they keep the site alive.
There are a number of sponsors who are fairly low key. They barely solicit business and most people refer others to them.
Of late some sponsors have, in my eyes, somewhat aggressively sought business. There's lots of chiming in in threads, and then their customers line up along side them and say yeah yeah, so and so is really good.
It's a tough item to discuss because the sponsors are paying money essentially to do what they are doing--and I don't think any guidelines on advertising are imposed, or at least not enforced.
However, lately, especially with new people to the site, there have been strong, strong recommendations and pressures for them to buy a saw from so and so and send it to x and y. While they are ultimately buying used saws, and/or having custom work done, after a while I think that if they are going to be so strongly recommended then when something goes wrong you can't just wipe your hands of it and say tough. I'm not saying anyone is in the wrong.
But I do think that we could tone down some of the fanfare in the threads. A quick mention of so and so does this, or maybe even better, just a PM. If you think highly of a sponsor and think they might do good for someone send them a PM. Not only will it probably benefit the sponsor more, but it gets away from some of the back and forth and open sollicitation in the threads. I just think at times it's in poor taste. That's just me.
