Drinkin' too much water will kill you...
Personally, I'd tell mom your uncle is a blitherin' idiot as I lit the fire, then hand her a map to uncle's house while showing her where the door is, and tell uncle to... well... go fly a kite.
I'm not tactful when speakin' to the gullible... and any attempt to reason with them is an effort in futility (laughin' in their face is more fruitful).

Your Mom is simply frightened. Maybe show her some real data about the thousands and thousands of families that heat with wood with no ill effects.
I'd be tempted to say something smarta** to your Uncle, but that wouldn't help your Mom the next time he gets on his high horse. Maybe show him the same data about the safety of burning wood in an efficient system. Good luck.

my uncle called and explained to my mother how unhealthy a fireplace is to people inside of the home.My mother recently had heart surgery and now is telling me she don't want fires anymore because it causes cancer and heart disease.I was hoping some people on this forum could help explain to her that this is not true so I can continue burning fires.i just got 3 years ahead on firewoood and would like to continue burning as it was cold in the house last night with no fire.
Gentlemen?
It's healthier than freezing. of course if you don't move in circles infront of a fire place half of you will freeze.

Gentlemen?

I agree with the others that it's bs. But it sounds like her brother got to her and now she's convinced. Accommodate your mother with a wood stove in that modified fire place.

straight!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute, burning wood increases the risk for freaking breast cancer!? Do women's boobs breathe? Good thing I don't burn synthetic logs, whatever that is.

Maybe you could slap in a EPA insert and therefore emit less toxins?

I would think that the synthetic logs are the ones that are paper or pressed sawdust - once packaged and bought in stores.

I think the whole misunderstanding may have originated from her brother misconstruing this news report :

It's just another example of the liberal mainstream media spewing their agenda with no facts to support it.

Totally off topic. Did you move!? For some reason I thought you lived in WA which helped explain why you're buddy buddy with slowp.

Does your uncle work for the Obama administration, say maybe the EPA? If so then I'm sure he will have a ton of facts to back his claims, pages and pages of facts, probably in the Affordable Care Act!

Good one...sweet!! Lol

See...it wasn't the Marlboros that killed the Marlboro Man all those years ago...it was that poor little fire. Told ya...Lol

Without a doubt, best reply yet!!! I haven't seen that skit in a long time. Lol

I can see right now at the end of the month your mother will have to lick stamps for two envelopes:

Envelope #1 - ...a $600-800 dollar check to the local utility company, and after paying that,
Envelope #2 - ...a $39.95 all expense paid, one-way Grayhound ticket for Uncs.

We have such bizarre ideas about what is healthy and what is not. Go to a grocery store and look at the labels. Think about the diet soda, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners made from coal tar and who knows what, massive doses of MSG in just about everything. All of us with large amounts of plastic and glyphosate in our systems. Look at all the medications people take and the effects of that. Huge numbers of kids on constant medication, skyrocketing rates of autistic spectrum disorders, epidemic obesity, etc. Fukushima pumping unimaginable amounts of radioactive particles into the air and ocean.

And here someone is worried about a little wood smoke! Where is any sense of reasonableness or proportion? If the flue works well and you burn it properly it's so far down on the list of risks it's not worth even thinking about. Now if she had a breathing problem already it might not be a good idea, but otherwise it's good to remember that life is fatal eventually.
