Dad has owned his 028 AV for nearly 30 years (maybe over 30 years). It has never let him down. Never stopped running, never been in the shop. Great saw.

He was at our new home this weekend, helping me clear brush (along with his FS80R w/ brush blade). Of course, after 30 flawless years of service, it died the first time it was in my use. :/ Looks like the crank wristpin bearing came apart. Piston is toast (gouges on sides), cylinder looks ok except for a small gouge at the bottom, and a couple of "dents" at the top of the intake and exhaust ports. Which, of course, means the cylinder isn't good at all.

I feel like crap. I remember helping dad clear brush with his old Homelite, before it was replaced by the Stihl. That Stihl has been an awesome saw, helping to keep our family warm for years.

That being said, it may be time for a new saw. Rather than listing my intended uses, how about "what is a modern replacement for the 028 AV"? Dad won't be cutting nearly the wood he used to (likely just the occasional downing of a dead tree...as opposed to annual firewood cutting for 20 years), so it something that is lighter would be better.

We were in the local Stihl/Husq shop this week. Ia'm needing a saw and brush cutter as well (leaning towards the KM 130 Kombi system). We were both amazed at how much smaller the same CC saw is (new), compared to his old 028 AV. Looks like we should be able to get same power in a much smaller saw, or much more power out of the same sized. I would prefer the former for him.

I'll be needing my own saw as well, and I think the "modern 028 AV replacement" would serve my needs quite well, too.

Ideas or suggestions? I AM going to scour ebay for replacement parts, as I'd like to rebuild his saw for him. However, this will be an "eventually" thing, and we'll need a working saw in the meantime.

The replacement in similar quality of build (not plastic homeowner) for a standard 028 AV would be a ms241, and for an 028 super it would be a ms261. I would lean towards the 261 as it is still lighter than an 028 and has more power for not much money over a ms241. The 241's advantage is it's lighter weight. If money is an issue then the ms250, ms251, and ms 271 are the lower cost/not near the quality alternative. Sorry to hear of the 028's demise. Those are tough saws. I still have the 028 super that given to me as a gift back in 1986. It would without doubt, be the last saw I would get rid of.
I too am looking at a kombi for the tiller mostly, but I need a lightweigh weedeater so am looking, and trying to decide, on a fs90, fs94, and rx100 as my fs250 is a bit heavy but mostly way too aggressive for the work I need a trimmer for right now.

If not using a blade I would get the fs94 or 100. If using a blade I would lean toward the others due to their solid shafts

If your just doing regular trimming with it I'd go for the 94. Its a 2 stroke. You'll get more head speed with it but if your gonna be doing thicker overgrown stuff I'd go with the 100 for the torque. 250 is a beast but really heavy

I'm torn on that. Dad's FS80 has been working fine with a blade on it, but he thought a bit larger might be nice for more regular use. I have also considered the additional attachments (blower, power broom, pole saw, etc). The blower reviews seem to state that "the more powerful the head, the better it works". The 130 will probably be heavy for the grass/brush (non-wood) trimming duty it will have, after this initial clearing. With a harness, and as a homeowner (ie, irregular use), it shouldn't be too bad.

The other option I've considered is a used FS250, and the 94 or 110 Kombi for "everything else".

261 if you just have to get new.if it were me i would just rebuild the 028.plenty of good used parts out there.

If you're looking at the combi system for your trimmer let me share sonething whith you. You don't have to have the combi power head to run those assecories on your trimmer... I just can't the head /gearbox out on my 130... I know for a fact the tiller and pole saw attachment work like that . I guess I'm my mind it just elimated the joints in the drive line.

Hate to say it but from my experience from the new Stihl line up the 028 can't be replaced except for....... well another 028.Kinda like a new age Politician against Ronald Regan.
Spot on.

If you've ever built both a 026 and an 028 you'll understand this. About the same displacement, but when you get to the 026 after the 028 you say "where did all the metal go?". The 028 is just a beefy overbuilt saw with an extra pound or two of metal in all the right places.

If you don't want to rebuild it, my vote is the 261 also. You can sell the old broken 028 here to make a few bucks back.
