WOOT WOOT!! Picked up another 490 today....this one may need more work than the other......or maybe not...either way a real decent looking one owner saw.....and the price was right!! $45.oo plus $21 shipping......was weird though.....at auction the shipping was $18.28 at point of sale it became $20.99.....????? Only $2.71 but????? That's never happened before......not worth fussing/whining about....but just the same.....odd...

Nice....original owner, sounds like....can't be that bad unless he's a total dolt. Was weird on the shipping, but I think the same thing happened to me a few yrs ago. It was the difference between First Class and Priority, but not with an object this big. Talk to the seller and ask what's up....he may not even know that happened.

They are only $16.07 each for shipping to me.......both seen better days....but parts are parts.....70E would be worth it if it had spark....but that is an unknown.....and who knows.....I once bought a 90 in much worse condition and it ended up having a barely used NOS P&C.....machine marks still very much visible on the piston skirts...ended up being a super deal....for parts....

That 111S with a good cover and not much else finally went for $249.99 plus $45.00 shipping....phew.....lot of moneys moving around for junk saws.....

I double checked "my" shipping costs based on your $16.07, still shows about $50.00 per saw. If you got them cheap enough, low bids, and paid only $32.14 shipping total, they'd be worth it for the parts IMO. But keep in mind 97% of my Jonsered purchases have been through eBay, I don't think that Jred was ever sold around here.

I once purchased two Jred together using BIN on eBay. The 670 West Coast was fairly easy to ID. The "unknown" model turned out to be a pretty nice 801....once I cleaned off 1/4 inch of nearly solid grime (on both saws).

That was nice sleeper, Robin. I put just about every 490 & 590 on my watch list (there aren't many)....and end up watching the bidding go way above my comfort zone.

-----------------------------------

I was going through some of my old photos files and came across a not-so-little "project' that I'd forgotten about, namely I tried to photograph every Jonsered saw and all the misc parts that I own. I'd like to post some images of the 625/670 & 630 parts for some help IDing some of them, but I don't want to be accused of bragging.

Since I've received some encouragement, here goes. I'll try not to post redundant images, but in some cases they might be necessary, or slip by me.

Edit--Jonsered 670, 630, & 625 images, part one.

Jonsered 670 625 630 eight.jpg Jonsered 670 625 630 eighteen.jpg Jonsered 670 625 630 five.jpg Jonsered 670 625 630 four.jpg

Edit--I'll stop here for now because I'm not sure what the limit is, or if these are going work.

I got the new-to-me 490 all straightened out....only had a couple minor issues....needed a new oil cap and the stud that holds the top cover on was twisted off flush in the bottom of the hole in the cyl.....the aluminum nut was missing as well.....drilled and retapped the hole and installed a used nut and oil cap that tbone75 sent me (Thanks John!!)......starts and runs super......great saw for $79.00.....it was set up for 3/8" chain so I put on an 18"...gonna convert it back to .325 X 18 when I get a minute....fast, smooth, nice running little saw!!!

Second 490 came in yesterday.......light scoring on the piston, ring stuck for about 3/8" in the middle of the exhaust port....don't believe the cyl hurt but haven't taken it apart yet. Funny thing is.....the stud that holds the top cover on is also twisted off flush in the bottom of the hole just like the first one!!! So it looks like the same repair as the first....only difference is the alum top nut is identical to Stihl air filter nuts and I just replaced an air filter on an 026 so I have two extras now. Other than those couple things it's a real nice looking saw. 16" X 3/8" Tsmura (Total Superbar) and three chipper chains.....good deal for $45....

Now that's a nice bunch of stuff!!!!

Thanks, Robin. That's just the 670, 625, & 630 stuff. For some reason I didn't include the removed pistons when I took the photos, but I did photo them separately. I accumulated my Jred saws & parts over time, and most were obtained back when sellers on eBay would list brand 'bundles.'

EDIT--The photos also don't include the complete 670.

OK..have a good friend that just moved over to the coast. He needs a small chainsaw and came to me. I told him Jonsered, but it could have been a little Husky too. I wanna get him something older and classy. Doesn't have to have electronic ignition, because I'll be working on it if it has any ills. I certainly don't wanna get him into electronics if that particular model has a bad record for module failure, or the replacements are crazy high/scarce. This saw needs to be really reliable, because I may only see it twice a yr. I love my friend but I've learned to video tutorials for whatever mechanical things I give him, or they'll get broken. He really tries, but he can't remember the little stuff. This is a guy that went under a bridge in an RV and couldn't remember his RV height....took both the AC units off the top.:omg:

Besides the 49SP, what are some of your other favorites? (Gotta be relatively available and not bringing huge prices on eBay).

Kevin

I would say the more popular the saw the more valuable. The 2055 is a real good saw...nearly modern....parts are not hard to come by but they are popular so kinda pricy.

Of course the 49sp is a great simple all around saw with serviceable points ign and adjustable oiler.... good history.....however they (for the most part) lack a chain brake.

Husky 350 is also a good choice...light good power...or a 55... real basic somewhat lack luster power wise but dependable and parts are everywhere dirt cheap...easy to work on...

I talked purchasing at a gold mill I was working at to buy a Husky...I think it was a Rancher 50. Acres says 1984 and it would have been a couple of yrs earlier than that? If it wasn't a 50, I'm not sure what it could have been....seem to remember the 'Rancher' part on the OM. Great little saw that saw a lot of abuse by people that had no idea what they were doing. I assume the 55 is just a more modern version. Lot of good things written about the 55. I looked at the 350....looks like a better saw, but prices are up there. I don't know what my friend is willing to pay. I did a nationwide search on craigslist and back here, I found one at $300...I think that's excessive...looked very used too. I'll do a search for the 55 and see what happens.

I wanna stay away from those cat mufflers, don't I?

Kevin

The 51 and 55 are the replacements for the 50 Rancher/Special and there was no Jonsered cousin. Both are very reliable sturdy saws with huge aftermarket support. They are split mag case design and hold up very well. You should be able to find a good one for $100-$150. I sold a nice 51 to some locals who are very hard on equipment and it has held up well for them.

The 350/Jonsered 2150 is a newer design with a plastic case. The biggest problem I've seen with them is the muffler bolts come loose and the hot muffler melts a hole in the oil tank. $300 is what they sold for new, so that is a bit high. $150-$200 seems to be the going rate for decent ones.

As for cat mufflers, I stay away from them. They just rob a little power, create excess heat and melt the top covers.

Yeah, I've heard bad things about the cat mufflers...stupid exercise in EPA futility/power. From what I can tell, stuff for the 55 is everywhere. He could probably even get parts for it in that little coastal town, if not the next. I was thinking $150 tops just because there are so many of them out there. That's in-line with the craigslist sweep I did nationwide.

There's one in the AS Tradin' Post for $150 plus shipping from Kentucky. Low compression....I really don't want to do anything more than clean up the saw, replace fuel lines/filter, rebuild the carb and any other small stuff it requires. It's not fair to my other saw projects to get into rings and polishing the jug etc...or worse. I'll keep looking......

Thanks guys!

Kevin
