I bought a 240v chainsaw the other day off the classifieds for $20, for noodling up unsplittable firewood rounds that have knots, branches, etc. The thing is advertised to have 2000w.
This thing is impressive! With a sharp 3/8lp chain and 16" bar it melts through oak and some of the softer eucalyptus. It's OK have a cord because my wood stack is only a couple of metres from the garage.
It's so much better than any battery powered saw I've used and easily cuts with a 40cc petrol saw.View attachment 942003
I have several electric saws that I have owned for many years so what. Where I do my cutting there is no available power. The electric saws can not compete with my 100 plus CC saws right now but probably some day they will. Producing batteries still take plenty of petroleum to make it happen so not certain all this will save the planet. I just ordered a bunch of saws to have on hand. It will be awhile before the gas police arrest all those pesky gas saw people. Thanks

Might be best to just keep my trap shut but honestly, I've never been too good at that. Anyhow, There's plenty of talk about whatever happens, happened in CA first. Now there's talk about Cali ex-pats moving out of state and wrecking whatever state they move to with their CA ways right? Anybody give any thought to the possibility it's a natural consequence of a state with too damn many people and not enough to go around? These other states talking about how they're "taking over" also seem to be dealing with booming populations and they aren't all fro CA. Much fun as scapegoating is, it doesn't solve many problems. Point is this, as long as we are more concerned with our "rights" than our responsibilities we are sure to loose more of the former than we'd ever care to see go away. This ain't 1955 anymore, folks. Change for the better or the change that's coming won't be the kind any of us want to see, I can promise you that.

California took another step toward its goal of ridding the state of all gas-powered engines thanks to a new bill signed by Gov. Newsom on Saturday.

The new law will ban the sale of all off-road gas-powered engines, including pressure washers, generators, lawn mowers, chainsaws and weed trimmers. Under the new law, these machines must be zero-emissions, meaning they will have to be either battery-powered or plug-in.

The new rule will be implemented by January 2024, or as soon as regulators determine is "feasible," whichever date is later. The California Air Resources Board has already started working on executing the law.
I have never heard such bollocks. that law must have caveats. there are 1000s of processes where it would be environmentally damaging to rely on battery compared to carbon fuel

yes just about everything we touch is synthetic, made with or from petroleum
50% will be easy, but net zero is a pipe dream, and will never happen
gas chainsaws wont be banned as such, they will just become obsolete collectable toys, and folks will say "why did they use those noisy smelly dangerous things ffs"

I seen a documentary showing the manufacturing process for these lithium batteries and how damaging it is for the environment. Just the amount of other resources it takes. Fossil fuels, water, and rare earth elements was crazy. Just like those almond trees in Cali. 1gal of water for 1 nut??? No wonder lake Meade is drying up. People ain't suppose to live in the desert. The land can only support so much naturally. California needs to focus on desalination of water not all this other crap. They care more about safe zones for iv drug use than if ya got a glass of water.

Usa has alot going on. I remember the 277v it was used for fluorescent lighting in schools and big buildings.

We are getting off topic sort of from the title here. The rare earth elements unless the definition is stretched are in the magnets in the permanent magnet type motors. I suppose copper, nickel, manganese, and cobalt are what you are calling rare earth here? Getting potable water out of sea water takes a lot of energy.

It still is. I retired from a local university physical plant dept. about 4 yrs ago and most of our indoor lighting was 277v. Got nailed a couple times replacing/repairing lighting and trust me, it's rather unpleasent.

you bunch of dinosaurs :)
batteries powered by renewables is ONLY solution we have, look at norway with 75% electric cars, powered by renewables, and look at their high gdp and lack of debt
"you dont know what you have got till its gone"
Norway has the population of South Carolina roughly and a massive oil field off its coast. They also tax the living **** out of their citizens. No thanks.

UR I can not agree with every thing stated but a great post none the less. California is filled with liberal Democrats that think that they have answers that no one ever thought of before. Let us feed and care for the homeless so they can get back to a healthy life. Let us build them homes and shelters so they can go back to work. Pure nonsense as the homes they live in are soon trashed to the point of being condemned then they are back out on the street. Just one example of a liberal mindset. California has been loosing about 1,000 people per day which as a result has had quite dramatic result in political and social environments. The Californians who leave are very conservative healthy minded people that just want the best the US can offer. My nephew moved his family to Washington State where I came from several years ago. He and his wife are doing well and adding their presence in a very meaningful way. Thanks
