should I do anything to my 044 bb kit before I install it? I have heard good things about these kits and have heard bad things?

Make sure you have clearance on the piston skirts at BDC. Check your squish once assembled.
How far do you want to go with it?
If I remember there were problems with rings hanging up in the exhaust port. Something to do with the grooved rings and/or chamfers on the port.

Use oem rings and circlips.
I don't think that's been an issue for some time now. Grande Dog said that was cleared up quite a while back. I'm using both in my ported 372 BB.

I'd use oem rings and clips myself.
But if it's been resolved, why perpetuate it? I have a set of 395 rings here but did not use them.

I did a search and was just wondering since the old problems have been fixed if there any new tips to use before the saw goes together. I am not going to port it or anything(yet) just wondered if anything should be smoothed out.

I put one of those together a little while ago and all I did was clean up the exhaust port a little, port match the muffler, assemble with no base gasket which gave me a squish of .020" and did a muffler mod. I turned out quite impressive.
