what kinda woods we playing with ?
hardwoods or that "west coast" hard wood ?
and what are your plans for chain ?
quick rule of thumb would be anywhere from 24-32"

lots of guys will try to stick with one gauge to make it easy in the long run...do you run .50 in the other saws ?
3/8 is real common. wouldn't fear a .404 in a softer environment.
are ya fellin? Milling or firewooding ?

shouldn't be a problem at all. thats a strong saw...will pull that easy...

just keep the teeth sharp...dull chain makes weak saw...fast

288 is an awesome firewood saw...should never need anything else.

My 2159 wears a 3/8 and i believe its a 50 gauge. Maybe 58. I dont remember. So maybe i should stick with the same measurements? I know the bars wont interchange, but the chains might

For sure. I'm gonna aim for what lone wolf said and get a 28" and if i decide to get into milling, I'll get a 36" w/skip chain.

Makes a few things easier, bars swapping,
Long run...I'd give it some thought.

Isn't there an issue with some of the replacement intake gaskets blocking the impulse passage?

I wouldn't bother deleting the base gasket. A 288 is plenty strong stock. They balance great with a 28"
