Well I got your attention.:laugh:
First, I pick I nice 270 out of the herd to make into a racer.

Then I craft a removable head so I can get rid of that squishy stuff that everyone seems to hate. Other modders reduce squish - I am going to eliminate it, if I can find it. When I looked in all I could see was a bit of carbon. Perhaps these 50 year old saws are too old for squish? Anyway, I wiped the carbon off with a rag and replaced the head.

Next mod was the exhaust. I measured the outlet at 195% larger than the exhaust port so I carefully filed out the corners to make it an even 200%. I polished the aluminium a little for better flow.

Then I installed a HD air filter to improve air flow in.

Now for the tricky bit - adjusting the carb. I pulled the old tilly apart for the first time in 51 years, sprayed a bit of carb cleaner on it and reassembled. The secret mixture settings are written on the shroud but I opened the high needle a further 1/64 of a turn. Seems to give me a little better acceleration.

Lastly I grind the ancient .404 chipper chain and she is ready to cut. This is my first video - do you think it is the worst one you have ever seen? If you do then don't watch the second one!

Neat saw! That folded aluminum cover is one complex piece - I'm glad I didn't have to design that. And I think they designed that "muffler" to give kids nightmares.
 
Those mufflers are the coolest!! Beam me up Scotty...
I wonder if one would fit a 275 Canadien,I don't have a muffler for mine. Do you have a spare you would part with??:msp_sad:

I wish I had a 275 but alas, I do not. I doubt that a 270 would fit as it is a lot smaller motor. I could be proved wrong though. Mufflers are bugbear of mine too. I had to buy a whole second saw to get a muff for my PM 340 and I am presently searching for a good muff for my J'red 930 - to replace this beauty:

Your PM340 I'm more familiar with,I fixed quite a few of them in the 80's in Canada but usually wearing different brand names,most commonly 1629 Skil and we could easily get parts from Skil,have you tried finding parts like a sprocket from Skil? Maybe they still sell parts for them? Most common part I had to replace on those was the clutch springs,usually were weak causing the chain to "run" at idle. They had that great growl when they ran too.
