I have a question for someone. I am pretty familiar with detroit diesels. My father in law just bought another skidder. Timberjack 450a. It has a detroit 453 silver t in it. My question is, is the overhead and rack adjustments the same on regular 453's? The silver t is the later version of the 2 stroke detroits.

Valves, injector height and racks settings are same. It does have rack delay mechanism (Fuel Modulator), that has to be backed off to set the rack. Delay operates from boost pressure.

Hope this helps!

Yes it helps. Seems like a version of aneroid valve cummins and cat used. Kept them from getting full fuel until boost pressure increased. Which really cut down in the black smoke when first accelerating. Thanks.

Have another question for you. Working on my father in laws 450a timberjack with a silver series 453t. I adjusted the valves, set injector height and adjusted the rack. It still doesn't have the power it should. Turbo checks out fine, it's getting fuel. When under load it has 50psi. It doesn't seem like it's getting enough air and you really can't hear the turbo start to kick in. Do you have any suggestions?

What injector do you have and what height pin did you set them to? This is what’s in my service manual, have another reference to check but it’s in my tool box at work. What governor do you have? Have you checked the boost pressure? It should be close to air box pressure spec.

Injectors are 5c60. I set them at 1.484. That's the closest one I had in my detroit tune up set. The engine is a silver series which has different pistons. I have not checked boost pressure. It doesn't seem to be building any boost like it should. I don't remember which govenor it had. Governed speed I did chech and it was 2200 rpm. I think it should be around 2600-2700 rpm.

Don’t think that would make much difference. .004 inch. Silver engines use the cross head pistons, rod bolt to the piston pins. Some engines had an open link governor and could be a PIA, to get set.
RPM sounds like it’s too low. Have to check my spec book tomorrow. If it has the sticker on the valve cover , I thought it had the HP / RPM rating on it. But it‘s been 20 years since I’ve been around a Detroit Diesel.
