I've used lots of different brands over the years. Now I just buy Pferd. I've found they remove more material with less pressure than other brands, and they last longer. They're not that much more expensive than the cheaper ones either.

Coarse or fine. More then just a file brand choice.

I prefer the saveedge coarse. Dont care for the fine pfred myself.

There is a guy selling the maddog coarse and timersalvage fine ones in my group. Hope to try maddog in coarse someday.

Word of warning. Dont fall for those black widow coarse pos files being talked up. They are half the file saveedge is. IMO folks that think those things are good havent used a good file.

Good point about the coarse/fine thing....and something I haven’t considered.

One thing about chainsaw files is the nomenclature seems way less standardized than other types of files. With other types of files, you can at least get TPI, maybe even Rockwell hardness. And if you have that info and buy from a decent Brand/country of origin...you have a pretty good idea what you’re getting. (How’s that for over-complicating a subject as simple as chainsaw files!)

I think I have what I need. Basically looking for some Vallorbe or Save Edge or Pferd files at a decent price. The decent price is the piece that still has me looking. I’m cheap.

FWIW - I’ve had excellent experience with Bahco in bastard/mill files. Their chainsaw files seem to not be very available in the states.

Curious what your idea of a decent price is?

Ended up buying a dozen save edge for $22.83 shipped from EBay. I don’t feel like that was a great deal by any means but better than my local option. Stihl files at $6.50 per 3 plus tax would end up being $27-$28 per dozen. The dozen I bought will last me quite some time.

Anything else I can find locally is Chinese mfg. Even the Oregon ones.

Im another save edge fan. A friend told me about the years ago, told him he was nuts, stihl is the best. He gave me one of his half shot files. It was sharper then my second time use stihl file. Last time I bought them I got a few cases of the 2 sizes I use.

When you factor in the cost of shipping and the convenience of picking them up in your mailbox, that's pretty cheap honestly.

I get a dozen timber savage files for $14 plus tax locally. Comes out about $15. That’s my idea of a good deal for a Swiss file.

Post it here if you find that deal.
Shows up on places like Bailey's, etc. in their sale circulars or web pages. I stocked up a while back, so have not looked lately.

Ironically (?) the best deal I find on Oregon depth gauge files is Menard's retail: typically about $5 with the depth gauge tool. Also, about the same price for the standard file guide / file / handle kit ($12 at many other places). They only sell the round files in the 2-piece blister pack for about $2.50 each; not bad for a run-in-and-grab price, but not as good as buying by the dozen. I have seen chainsaw files as much as $6 each at some hardware stores.

UPDATE just tried it. Flat rate $12. So if you ordering alot that is cheap. Same price shipping, just goofing off for 1 dozen to 30 dozen
Yeah, this stuff changes a lot. Difference between shopping around and ordering from your standard supplier. Plan ahead for consumables!

Walmart is the way to go. You can get almost any brand no shipping cost. I buy enough and say that will hold for awhile. Dull files just make me very POed. There is not always a sale going on, but decent prices and quite convenient. Thanks
