1997 257

Hello, new to site
used to have a homelite 150 automatic, bought a house and was going to heat with wood.
I went down and bought a brand new 257 in april of 1997 serial number 6390880.

I have used this saw a lot, back then I paid 459.95 for the saw, plus a case and oil and tax.

I didn't have 500 bucks back then, but i needed to heat my family, and I heard good things about
husky, Well 16 years later, it is still my go to saw.

I have the mag cover.

things I have done:

never lend your saw out.

fresh gas, good oil.

keep it clean.

never lend your saw out.

question: the bar oil use is down, pump? adjustment?
any help is much appreciated.

Might not hurt to try popping off the clutch, remove the 3 allen screws, screw in 2 longer allen screws in the 2 holes near the center of the oil pump and screw them in evenly to pop the oil pump off, might have some crud in it. While your there check your worm gear and also pull out the oil line from the tank and clean the pickup filter on the end of it, the hose will come right out. Do yourself a favor and drain the oil unless you need to do some rust control on your bench!

Since this tread has to do with the 254xp series chain brake cover and read it was used on the 262xp. I was wondering which metal chain brake cover would work on the 262xp. I read the thread and found the Husqvarna recall memo online but there are different part numbers for the cover any idea to which part number I should use?

The recall in still ongoing.

The 1998 262xp IPL lists the complete cover (with brake) as 503 74 70-72, and the complete brake as 503 72 74-01.

The 1998 261 IPL shows the same, as do the late production (2001) 257 IPL- but the late production 254xp IPL shows -73 for the complete cover. I don't remember what the difference is right now - but my memory tells me it has something to do with the vibe dampening of the cover?

Btw, the last model to be discontinued of that "family" no doubt was the 262xp, as it was offered in Israel and Russia at least as late as 2005, and the 262xph even longer (in Russia). What I don't know is where the really late ones were made....

So, Mr. Troll educate me. What does the "h" signify? Is it equivalent to "xpg"?

It looks like the magnesium cover has 3 cast in pins that match revised crankcases. Does anyone know if I can simply grind off the pins and retrofit to my 1993 262's that have the earlier crankcases and plastic covers. The modified cover would only be braced by the two bar mounting studs, but the original plastic cover only had the two plastic ears in addition to the studs so the difference shouldn't be that great. Thanks, guys.
