From what some say they are ok. Steve Backus uses a 3450 in his small bear carving video, but does most of the detail work with it, and a Husky, and does a couple things with a Stihl 021. He raves about how the 3450 is one of the greatest chainsaws every produced...he uses a small 12" carving bar with a dime tip.I was thinking the other day about the dust covered 346, after buying the 211, that 346 sits alot. Its not a bad saw though, as you mentioned should be great for carving.
The thing to remember is that it still costs quite a bit to convert a saw over to 1/4" pitch, if they aren't. Most figure they might as well spend a bit more on the saw, given the cost of the bar/chain/sprockets/etc...
Yours is not running 1/4" pitch, is it?
