the older 044s have weaker cranks than the newer 440/441?
Yes. They went from a 10mm wrist pin to a 12mm wrist pin at SN X 29 583 701.
The 441 is only related to the 440 in displacement. It's a completely different saw.

Don't the 10mm saws have better (or at least different) cylinder porting as well?
could you instal a new 12mm on the old 044s?
... tell me why an old 046 is about 5 pounds heavier than a new 460 mag.
The porting may have changed, but that wouldn't affect the weight of the saw.
do you think it would be a good idea to make that change? i wanna make my 044 tough as nails.
alright.
If you're going to put a BB kit in it and you have an old style 044 crank you will have to upgrade.
i was planning on it, you dont think it would handle the BB without the upgrade?
I thought this thread was about handles I just replaced the full wrap bar on my 390XPG with a half wrap. I'm selling the full wrap on eBay.
Nobody makes a BB for the 10mm piston pin saws, so if you want a BB you'll have to swap to the 12mm setup.
