ID this wood for my brother!

Well... it ain't elm, and none of the others possibilities mentioned (including the persimmon from me) grow where I live.
I know when to quit... and that would be right now.

Bark does look like persimmon but the few that I've cut had darker heart wood.
 
I'll now go with Hedgerow and say Black Gum or Tupelo, as it's known in my area. I wondered about the not so dark heartwood... As Spidey said, I don't see much of either in my area.
I had a whole thread on some Persimmon complete with Pictures.....

But they gone.....
