My big old twin cylinder two man machines such as the Titans and Merc Disston KB7's would have to be the closest comparison to the large English doubles - .475 No. 2NE , .577NE, and .600 NE. They are slow compared to modern cartridges/saws, but have more than enough grunt to get the job done.
The big, single cylinder geardrive Homelites - 900G etc are more like the .505 Gibbs and the .500 Jeffery. Double square bridge Magnum Mausers with lots of strength and style.
