I bought this saw used a couple of days ago, its my first saw and these rings look weird to me, they have some discoloration going on. Shouldn't they be shiny? Compression is great judging by the hang test. Can't test for leaking but they sound like they leak air (I can hear squirting noises) when i move the piston up and down. It starts and runs fine, I have no big wood around now to really test it. I am thinking they might be tempering colors from overheating? Thoughts?

Piston looks kind of scored could be discoloration due to piston transfer. Metal on the rings. Try putting a paper towel and see if it’s all black. Could be carbon deposits as well.

Doesn't look good. Clean the area with a Q-tip and post another photo.

Thanks for the replies. There is no more hissing sound, the spark plug was loose. I wiped it with a Q-tip and it came out clean and oily. So this can only be the color of metal itself, wich can be seen when I reflect the light bulb on it it changes color to a more metalic one. This makes me think it can only be tempering colors, and this color would be in the ballpark of 200-250 C. How bad would that have been if it got so overheated?
