I've never before seen this in a gas tank. My guess is someone tried to seal a leak in the gas tank by using a liquid sealant.

When I drained the old bar oil from the saw it had a 'gas' smell. I'm not sure if it contained fuel mix, was just old, or had been thinned with something. It doesn't matter now as I'm parting out the saw. I'll probably test it just to know.

lol...thats not me..brought it to the camp and my buddy took it for a spin, its the only photo I have of it on the PC.
yes I used it on this little bike for my kids with great results.
As my cousins from the Fox Valley in WI (Shiocton, Fremont, Zittau area) would say, "Check out my new minibike-EH!"
Haven't seen one of those running since the late 70's!
I did something similar with an old '74 Honda CB360. I kept having to rebuild the carbs every half-tank of gas & finally just paid a radiator shop to seal the tank - I was 19 and didn't have the sense to do that first thing...

Chris, I'm no expert on manufacturing practice, but this appears to be someone's misguided effort to perhaps cure a tank leak. If the factory was doing something like this, I believe it would not have extended beyond the inner tank. Do you agree? I don't believe this would have solved the problem if it was a DIY. The tank is sealed by the gasket. Some RTV sealant filmed over the gasket will help, but coating the tank probably wouldn't. Hope this helps. Happy sawing.:msp_smile
now you made me think of my old POS '74? honda SL350? like i said it was a POS, leaked oil out of the heads but gave my engine that nice glossy look on one side. fun bike but glad its gone. replaced it with a yamaha TS650A. now that bike i really miss.

I now have a SL11A that also has a treated ??? gas tank, it looks much more professional than the SL-4. I asked about this in the Remington sticky/thread.
Chris, do you have a photo of the SL11A as well? I collect older Remingtons and have never seen anything like the previous photos. I suppose this could have been one of the "next best thing" fads to prevent gas tank leaks or fuel breakdown?? Don't really know
