Had the winch and steel laying around for close to a year for this and could never seem to get time to get it built. Chainsaws and mowers seem to keep us busy. My tech out in the shop has been bored ever since it started getting dark early so last week he volunteered to take the stuff home and build it. Still have to spool the cable on and build a saw holder and come up with some chunks of chain for chokers.12234923_1700799930153982_8555576548196998692_n (1).jpg 12219391_1700799960153979_7528707629619574589_n.jpg 12239751_1700799976820644_7948032636054955443_n.jpg 12219331_1700800043487304_574837876116705546_n.jpg 12241284_1700800076820634_2117958964470646387_n.jpg 12243167_1700800103487298_5266625139112566301_n.jpg 12227182_1700800003487308_6854982741272860761_n.jpg 12227830_1700800243487284_7752428153658059931_n.jpg 12241210_1700800280153947_5591625199677417739_n.jpg 12243494_1700800303487278_1422018968520820291_n.jpg

Still have a few small items to do yet but basically done. I wanted to put a 1/4 steel plate across the 3 legs as a butt plate but the steel is buried under a stack of tin for the roof on the barn so that got put on hold. Going to try it out without the plate and see how things go

spooled the cable on tonite and added the chokers. kinda slow winching but it anchored down great! i had planned on just setting the winch on the ground and letting it pull the tractor to my pickup when we spooled the cable on. didnt happen, the truck came to us. without the parking brake set on the tractor, just the winch set down on the ground we winched my truck to us. 3/4T diesel pickup in park moved on pavement before the tractor moved. Still need to grab a shackle for the snatch block. couldnt find one so i made due with a tube gate hinge.

How do you use the d rings.
I dunno. Had em so i added em. Ill figure out a use for them sooner or later. currently they make nice hydraulic line holders. when its unhooked the lines tuck nicely through them to keep the hoses off the ground. when its hooked up a bungee hooked into one keeps the lines out of harms way

How much did it cost to replace the ujoints:drinkingcoffee:.

oil leak is fixed. I found a torn gasket where the motor mounts to the winch. working on adding a saw holder now and hopefully tomorrow it will be in the woods for a test run.

that hook you put on it are my favorite style...just gotta keep em oiled if they are left out in the weather:rock::rock:
those sliders are going to crush the hell out of the thimble though, possibly even crush/cut the cable...could have swaged a stop on the cable before the swaged connector for the hook...

we were looking at it earlier and came to the same conclusion. not quite sure what to do about it though. I bought the cable premade. Open to a suggestions....we dont have a shop around that does anything with cables/chokers.

Ahh...
Does the other end have anything on it, like a swaged end to connect to the drum?
if not then you could make a bushing that slides on the cable and rests against the swaged connector for the hook...basically just a very thick washer...
Other than swaging a stop on it I don't think there's much else you can do

nothing on the other end of the cable. I was afraid you was going to say that :(. We got the cable spooled on the drum so nice and tight and now we will be pulling it back off. I didnt think to check that before spooling it on......got excited and rushed the job

How big is your spool on the winch and what size cable and how many feet does it hold? I want to build one and figuring out the spool size is the 1st step.

braden 10000#. their are 2 options for drums on this winch...8" and 10". i have the 8" and it only holds 100' of 3/8 cable. would have loved to have the 10" drum and spooled 150' of cable on it but i took what i found cheap. gave $100 for the winch off craigslist

edit: maybe it was $150 for the winch....it was a year ago so cant remember but it was a deal either way....drove 2 hours to pick it up and smiled the whole way home

I've got a Braden LU-4 off an M37...believe it's rated 7500#, had it on a ford NAA for a 3point skidding setup, worked real good...now it just collects dust

this thing is slow enough i am probably going to cuss it but it doesnt work the tractor a bit to drag my pickup with wheels locked on pavement, was priced right, and might be slow enough to keep me out of trouble and the best part....... total investment in this whole winch setup is $300 give or take for materials

Running it with a hydro motor will make it slow...they were designed to run off a pto shaft from the transmission...

Looks like a main line made for a wrecker. I just put the same line on my old fransgard for around $80. The large end hook would be hard to live without now that I've used it.

Good looking winch, use those drings for skidding out logs. I built a homemade winch that was almost too fast. It's a hard thing to find the right speed of line.
