I like seeing the UPS guy pull into my driveway. There's always something cool inside his truck. This time it was a brand new Echo CS-500P. Here's a few pictures of it...

I'm of the understanding that this saw is a Shindaiwa design and has an unlimited coil. My first impression was that it seems to be well built and light. Though I feel like this is more bar than it needs, it sure helps the back when cutting up tops and bucking small stuff.

What's the displacement Randy? I use to run a 550evl I think it was, and a couple bigger one's. What are you doing to it. I am assuming porting?

This is a mag cased saw, well built IMHO.

This saw had almost .060 squish and some very odd timing numbers. I ditched the base gasket and shaved .020 from the base to end up with .023 clearance.

Is that a clam shell design saw? What are your plans for the saw?

I like what you've already done. What carb is on it (OEM)? Is it a fully adjustable and are you going to use it?
 
This saw has some odd numbers.

Exhaust 118° FTDC = 124° Duration.
Transfers 128° FTDC = 10° Blowdown
Intake 82° FTDC = 164° Duration.

This port shape means that the intake opening is progressive so the intake timing numbers will seem high. After machine work the intake was opening at 86° from TDC.

I'll post a finished video tomorrow and some pics of the muffler mod. I forgot to take any more while I was reassembling it. :(

I raised the exhaust to 112° and widened the exhaust, transfers, and intake.

It runs a lot better now too. :)
 
Internally, that saw looks good. I like the quad ports. I really like that clear spark plug boot, that's cool.

I did some reshaping on those transfer plugs and widen the outlets up a bit but I didn't touch the lowers at all.

Yes the carb stays OEM, and it is fully adjustable.

Nice, Randy. That P&C does not have much in common with the modern Echos I've been in 400, 450, 550. Looks Shinny all the way.

I could learn to like these little saws Mitch. I don't care for the transfer covers, but could work around that.
 
Why don't you care for the transfer covers? Don't they give you a little better access to play? Curious of your concern.

By the time you open (raise and flatten the roof) the uppers you are above the lip of covers. It's not much of an issue on this build as it's not getting a popup and the height of the transfers stays very close to stock. But on a more radical build.........


I would rather the transfers be designed like the 346XP. They are deeper so they don't make nearly as tight a turn at the top.
 
I like these saws pretty good once broke in and muffler modded .i would think once ported they would run reallly well. i have a 16 and 18 inch bar for mine.
