Cottonwood splits easily after you dry it in the round for half a year and let the bark fall off. Green cottonwood is almost impossible to split--stringy beyond belief. Once dry and barkless, it really has almost no odor when burned, but nobody ever waits for it. So, it gets a bad rap.
 
I started to think a comment about Cottonwood until I saw you were from WY. That's what you guys got out there. That is a monster!

My brother, the arborist, has some stories about some huge cottonwoods, but we generally don't burn them much back here in IA. They tend to be some of the bigger tricky removals around here just because they get so massive and are close to buildings etc that precludes the notch and drop method.
 
About have it cut to manageable pieces. This is the 9th pickup load so far. There has been 6 cords out in addition to this. Looks like 6 more loads like this to go, including the stump.
