I would like some general information on using a portable sawmill. I have never cut wood for anything but firewood. When green wood beams (pine, doug fir) are cut, how long do they need to dry/season before they can be used? Does the wood have to be kiln dried or can it sit outside under cover? Can you use downed trees in the sawmill? What is the best entry level saw? I’m interested because I wish to build a cabin on my land and have a lot of trees to utilize. I have seen mills for as little as $2500.

A good sawmill costs alot more than 2500 you want a mill like a Woodmizer with powered travel etc. For 2500 you can have a guy with a portable mill to come and cut your wood.
