Silly Question # ?!?!
My MS 290 is finally well broken in (15-20+ tanks)and I took it in to be adjusted. Max RPM was 14,600 and the technician really raised his eyebrows. We set it at 12, 300 and it's good to go. Is it normal for a saw to gain that many RPMs after breakin and could the saw have been damaged. No I don't pull WOT anywhere except in the cut. Thoughts??

You shoud set the max Rpm about 500->750 or so lower when new. As it breaks in it will go up usually 500 to 1000.
