I went into a local hardware store today to look @ some new chains for my Poulan Pro PP5020AV 20in.
As usual a young feller tried to convince me into trading for a new Echo or Husky, which I declined.

As I was leaving he & his boss showed me an older Stihl 026 which they had taken in on trade 18in bar...customer who traded it said it wouldn't start and traded it in on an Echo.
The shop guy has it up and running with sharpened semi-chisel chain and it sounds good...but yet I'm a novice at all this...just bought the Poulan Pro 20in bar/ 50cc about 2 weeks ago.

Is this a good deal or what...and what are some the potential problems I could encounter with this saw?
I figure @ 75$ I should be able to sell on "fleabay or quackslist"...fairly easy if becomes problem child! ;)

Here are some pics...sorry but lighting was bad.

Any thought or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

$75 is a great price, even for a carcass that needs a new piston and cylinder if everything else is there. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat for that price.

026 is a dead simple oldschool saw. About as basic as they come, not a lot of quirks. Only problem is the non-adjustable carb (no H needle adjustments) that some of the 026/260 saws got, but that's a carb swap away from being a non-issue. Otherwise, they're great little saws!

whats the bar and chain worth.. can't go wrong with an 026, the parts that are there are worth way more than that. even if you have to get the pot and piston changed you still get a bargan and a work horse of a saw!

Buy it, send it to one of AS's resident mechanic/rebuilders, and sell the Poulan...or keep it for a loaner. 026 is a classic for it's size. Can't go wrong at that price really...

Reggie if they have some wood you can bury that in before you buy it, have a go at that saw and by all means buy it for that price if it cuts well.

You just can't beat that deal, can't imagine why they would let it go for that.

Guess, I'll just step up before some of you "Vets"...make yer way to the deep south...of course you know already that I'd feel a hella va lot better if I had the knowledge and where with all you guys have!:(

But, I've read some really good reviews on the saw...and there is a Stihl Service Shop about 10 minutes down the road.
Hmm...now my Poulan is running a 20in bar & 50 ccs & this Stihl is 10-15 yrs old and only has 18in bar and runs 46 CC...somebody sell me on the advantages here other than the cheap price tag?

Will I be able to bury it in wood better than my Poulan?
Wonder how it will fare up against this mighty knarly batch of Hedge I just inherited?:D

Hey...I'm a tad green, but my biggest chore is making up some story for my wife...seeing how just bought the Poulan...maybe I'll just hide it in the garage...likes she hides them "NEW DRESS"S" in the back of the closet, HUH?:rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

BOYS....I'M ALL IN!!!...I"LL BE THERE IN THE MORNING COME HELL OR HIGH WATER....think I'll stop by and p/u Ole RED GREEN...and head to the woods!:hmm3grin2orange:

Thanks

I got my 026 for free, but you definitely cannot complain over $75 for one! Put a fully adjustable carb on it (if it lacks one now), open the exhaust up a bit, retune, and cut away. It's amazing what a little muffler mod and tune did to my 026.

If I can find another like mine I'll buy it ASAP.

Come on, Reg. That orange saw won't hold a candle to your Pull-on. Trust me. All the REAL saw huggers drive Pull-ons. Trust me.

How to describe the difference between (I'm assuming) a new Poulan, and THE classic 026? Hmmm, kinda like comparing Harbor Freight tools to Snap On. If the 026 runs right as is, you'll understand as soon as the chips fly! If it needs rebuilt, it's still worth doing.

Examine it closely though. $75 is way too cheap. If it is indeed an 026.

Don't get caught sayin' that over on the greensaw forum. Those guys will ride you outta town on a rail. ;o)

By the way, Reg, didn't anyone ever tell you that a Stihl won't cut hedge. ;o)
