The twisted shoe lace has a slight amount of stretch that allows it to slip over the cup hook (that I put in) to hold the saw in, but it unhooks easily by tugging on the end and then sliding the saw out. The same thing can be accomplished in many different ways with snaps and latches, etc. but the end result is that it closes off the hook on the handle and allows you to move through the tree without constantly worrying about whether you are going to lose your saw.
It is the same principle you would use when you strap your gun in your holster while galloping through the hills but still allows for a quick release when confronted with bad guys when you come into town...
